People may be saying they wanted “different”, but are they being honest or did they really want more of the same, being “not the woman”?
Here in North Carolina, the male, black Democrat running for state supreme court won, by a large enough margin for that race to have been called early in the night. The two male, white Democrats running for governor and state atty general appear to have eked out very, very slim wins. Even if that ends up reversing after provisional ballots and finished and the mandatory recount occurs, they kept it damn close. But the female, black Democrat running for Lt. Governor? Crushed. The female, white Democrat running for US Senate? Crushed. The female, white, incumbent Superintendent of Public Instruction? Crushed. And of course, the state went for Trump.
Hmm, what seems to be the commonality between those Democrats who got crushed vs. those who won or kept it close?
Also interestingly, the gubernatorial race (and to some extent the AG race) were heavily tied to HB2, NC’s “bathroom bill” that’s had national coverage. The Democrat’s stance on protecting transpeople probably explain why those races were much tighter than the state supreme court, but those races still turned out much better than those where we ran a female candidate. Apparently people’s hatred of the trans community pales to people’s hatred of women. I’m sure that news is shocking to this website.
StlSin – and in my town, we just rejected our chance to elect our first woman mayor ever. She has been on the City Council for 10 years (from my ward), and has been a real advocate for the common man, the working man, the downtrodden. She has experience, is known and liked. She got 30%, losing big to the corporate consultant with no real government experience who basically said all along that he was going to be pro-business and advocate for more giveaways of power to the big suits.

Sometimes you just gotta break a few eggs, if you want to make a gooey mess on the counter…
