Who are these “liberal elites”?
Guest post by Josh Spokes.
“Liberal elites”. “Liberal elites.”
Who are they, New York Times and mainstream media? Who are these horrible super rich people who want women to have birth control, who want poor people to have food stamps and medical care (even poor people who super HATE them some “elites” but still want health care)?
Who are these villains that you say, again, are responsible for Trump’s victory? What ever did they do to make the people actually effected by Republican policies—no job stability, promises to take away their healthcare—hate them?
Fucking shut up. Do some real world analysis or shut up.
Racism and misogyny won Trump the election. Not my middle class ass. Not my “liberal elite” friends who work in human services, organize town clean ups after floods, who work to help poor people sign up for Medicaid.
We didn’t fucking do this. We actually try to HELP people. We do help people. We’re not perfect, but we haven’t done anything to deserve this stupidity.
And if one you puts up a quote from that self-regarding hick version of David Brooks, JD Vance, I’ll boot you out. I’m shocked at how many smart people have been taken in by his facile and obviously wrong headed diagnosis.
And the other part of that is the idea that government itself is out to hurt people – elite governmental officials. I tried one day to count every activity I did that was made easier by government actions; my list was too long by the time I went to work just from things like turning on my lights (they came on) and flushing my toilet (the waste went away, and I don’t smell it in my house or in my town). The cereal in my bowl, the milk on my cereal, the gas in my car, the road I drive on…and that’s just the barest start.
But these people hate the government, because it “never does anything” for them. My students, sitting in a public school with very low tuition (our school is one of the lowest tuitions in the nation, thanks to great support from the public) argue that government does nothing for them, they get nothing from it. Farmers getting more than half their income from government subsidies refuse to vote to support anything that might raise their taxes a penny, because the government isn’t doing anything for them.
Elites…government…all trying (with quite a bit of success) to help people, and being hated for that, being blamed for this horrible election, being crapped on because we care, not in spite of caring. We are despised because we care about the wrong people…not the fetuses, but the living people.
When you say “school” you mean college, yes? I was stumped for a minute trying to figure out tuition at a public school.
Yes, college. Sorry, I should have been more precise.
And the endless whinging about how all candidates are ‘just the same’…because Big Corporations own them? Do you think the most rapacious manager of the most destructive business actually WANTS a reckless failure like Trump?
Votes count. Populist movements are effective, and can be dangerous. Gun nuts, racists, anti-abortion crazies etc. have already wielded disproportionate influence in every election of the last 40 years.
It wasn’t Father Coughlin or Charles Lindbergh who managed to dot the eye and cross the t into full national power. It was someone even worse.
