What you think it means
From Amy Dickinson aka Dear Amy at the Washington Post:
Dear Amy: You used the word “mansplaining” in your reply to “Perplexed.” I don’t think it means what you think it means.
Mansplaining is a sexist word used by feminists to shut down any debate with a man if they think they can’t win with their argument.
Your use of it in your column is offensive to anyone who is capable of a logical discussion.
Mark R. Bates, National Coalition for Men
Mark: Others complained that I had misused the word “mansplaining,” but you are the only person to mansplain while doing it.
“Mansplaining” is a slang term used for when men co-opt ideas, thoughts or concepts generated by a woman and then reexplain these concepts back to her in a highly patronizing and “expert” way. (See above.)
Mansplain that, logic king.

[feels perplexed]
WTF!
[Rob continues reading with interest]
[Rob LOL’s. Literally, actually for real]
That complaint and response deserves to form the dictionary definition of mansplaining.
“you are the only person to mansplain while doing it”
LOL me too Rob#1. hoist on his own petard
Reminds me of how Rebecca Goldstein (Plato at the Googleplex)–in a footnote mind you–slipped in a zinger “Hugh Everett [one of the founders of the many worlds theory] who died in this world in 1982 …”. She has several zingers that trigger the LOL reflex unexpectedly.
Expansive ‘splaining from ignorance. Does it have to involve co-opting from the ‘splainee? I guess so, for the more elegant meaning of ‘mansplaining.’ But there is a vaster array of presumptuous assumed authority that seems to include this specific category.
We’ve been seeing an awful lot of ‘transplaining’ lately. My ex used to work in a pink collar ghetto situation, where alt-med and woo were constantly being ‘splained’ to her by her supervisors and co-workers. The gender divide around this mindset was so pronounced that she coined a name for it: ‘Matronizing.’
Oh god. I hate it when women disproportionately buy into that shit.
OT (well, not really)…
Here’s Lionel Shriver replying to that Australian nonsense.

Isn’t this all just a continuation of postmodernism?
Yep, see post.
#4: It’s not just women disproportionately buying into alt-med woo, it’s that as a woman you’re supposed to be into it – like fashion, decorating and cupcakes.
