At the GPO today
Anti-Islam group Pegida launched its Irish branch at a rally outside the GPO today.
Pegida (Patriotic Europeans against the Islamisation of the West) is a broad European network of loosely linked groups opposed to what they call the “Islamisation of Europe”.
Meanwhile, the ‘anti-racist coalition’ also held a counter demonstration outside the GPO in protest of Pegida.
And the gardaí broke up the demonstrations.

Refused to join in w/ Britain to fight Hitler so moral compass of Irish questionable.
That’s stretching it a little, Man. Not a good Idea to take one factoid out of context, six hundred years of context, turn it into a generalisation and then use it to condemn a whole nation.
Just for comparison, the USA refused to join with Britain to fight Hitler. They’d even passed a law to say they couldn’t do it unless the US was attacked. Yes, there was significant help by way of loans and intelligence sent our way by the devious routes discovered by FDR but there was no help from the US government per se until Britain had “stood alone” for more than a year. The attack on Pearl Harbor brought the US government in but if the Japanese had not launched that attack then FDR might well have been impeached at the behest of all those who were actively pro-Hitler – starting with Grandpa Bush!
Hear we go again! Muslims are members of a race, so opposition to Islam is racism. It’s a very simple formula and it’s very attractive to the average useful idiot.

Sweden that famously moral society, also refused to join in the war against Hitler, in fact the Swedes made some rather unsavoury compromises with the Nazis, and don’t mention Switzerland. It’s not surprising that Eire gave the British the finger after 800 years of oppression, with the benefit of hindsight it was a wise decision.

Agreed, and that’s why there are so many conspiracy theories about Pearl Harbor.
The Socialist Workers Party/Anti-Austerity Alliance/People Before Profit were behind the counter-demo.
I no longer see such political formations in the same light I once did.
Why do so many so-called leftist/progressives champion an ideology that negates just about every principle they stand for?
Why, for example, would an outfit like ‘People Before Profit’ push for massive numbers of migrants whose presence in Ireland ( and elsewhere ) constitutes a large pool of idle labour power used by business interests to depress wages and erode benefits and to…well…put Profit Before People?
Islamisation is a real thing, deranged anti-immigrant racism is a real thing, Opponents of either easily slide into collaboration with the other.
All the noble anti-fascists who grovelled before Stalin. All the opponents of Soviet tyranny who cosied up to deranged anti-semitic White Russians and reactionary Catholics.
