Has an exchange like this ever occurred? At this point, Dawkins is beyond simple confirmation bias. He is now engaging in active sophistry.
Still, those (largely straw) feminists are taking one hell of a beating. If Dawkins was a chemist, engineer, metallurgist, physicist etc he’d understand the concept of splash damage. Apparently they don’t teach biologists about safe use of toxins…
Rob -Dawkins is simply ignoring S O P for dealing with toxins. Never let potentially hazardous materials escape the lab!
He seems desperate to affirm that this straw argument is true, using exactly this sort of thing as ‘evidence’. It’s almost like he’s trying to justify that tweet, his subsequent related tweets and his annoyance at people who disagree with him.
Has he responded yet to any of the many, many people who have asked him for, you know, actual evidence for countless women sending sockpuppet threats to themselves so they can play the victim?
One minute (some years ago) we were all sitting around having a happy dinner with Dawkins, and the next minute.
I especially appreciate the other @ names listed in the tweet along with Dawkins. Yes, they do all fit well together. MRA/slympit sympathizer and retweeter (Dawkins), Slymepitter/MRA (Thunderf00t)and Slymepitter/MRA (Sargon_Of_Akkad). Yep… a matched set. I posted the other day that it seemed that the majority of men in the atheist and skeptic “communities” are anti-feminist or claim that sexism can be “overlooked” if there are other “positive attributes”. Seeing bigotry against an oppressed population (antifeminism) as a deal breaker is tantamount to throwing the baby out with the bath water to many… especially those who don’t experience that oppression. I was told by a man that no, I was quite incorrect, that it was the minority who are that way. But…. Thunderbląb himself has almost half a million followers on twitter and Youtube,….. over 466,000 at this point. I believe that men who are true feminist allies in the skeptic community are the minority among skeptic/atheist men. Rare birds.
I must say, Dawkins is doing his best to show the world that the NECSS made the right decision.
If he had walked it back and dialed the vitriol down he could have looked like a victim, but now he is just reacting in anger.
Good point, Soren. Nothing about his reactions to all of this indicates that Dawkins has any sense for how to deal with controversy.
When whole halves of populations are being kept down, kept out of conversations, kept out of the right clubs, kept from work or academic opportunities, kept from equal pay, Dawkins just brushes it all off because they’re Western women who should just be thankful that they’re not getting shot in the head. But when it is him who is kept from say, getting marmalade through security or kept from getting a choice keynote because he’s done something clearly offensive, it’s “Holy fucking shit! The world has gone bonkers!” And then when people point out his shitty reaction to these minor slights, he doubles down by mocking those who call him out.
He has absolutely no sense for how to handle being in the eyes of the hurricanes he generates.
I guess he figures CFI’s PR person can handle it for him.
Assuming they are any good, get that person a raise, STAT!
His descent is accelerating.
If it wasn’t for the context, and the grotesque resentment, the cartoon would be worth a shrug.
YES there are plenty of pseudo-progressives who ignore and rationalize jihadism. But there is NO particular ‘feminist’ orthodoxy doing so. Greenwald/Guardian/Galloway etc. deserve a hell of a lot more scorn than the occasional feminist academic who falls down the relativist rabbit hole.
It seems like Dawkins is on his way to a stroke.
Mmmhmm. I guess there’s a segment of regressive left whom this is satirising, however clumsily.
What gets me about the cartoon is the grotesque expression (unchanging in all four panels) on both character’s faces. They look as though something just insinuated itself into some orifice out of frame. Since that expression is incompatible with whatever it is they’re talking about, it’s just distractingly bad art.
they look like drug addicts
Jerry Coyne has posted this cartoon on his blog, and has even gone to the trouble of explaining it to his readers. How thoughtful.
justinr @14:
Yeah, Jerry is another (rightly) respected scientist who insists that discourse be polite unless he personally decides otherwise. His books are great, he’s a hell of a writer. But he also defends the repugnant views of people like Dawkins and Harris.
Come for the excellent science books, don’t stay.
