Important news from the Independent:
Eddie Redmayne has criticised the prominent feminist Germaine Greer for claiming Caitlyn Jenner changed her gender in order to steal the limelight from her co-stars.
Ok. Who the fuck is Eddie Redmayne? Why should we care?
Redmayne, who plays transgender artist Lili Elbe in The Danish Girl, said he disagreed with her provocative comments.
Oh, that’s who he is – the one who isn’t trans.
The 34-year-old London-born actor told British GQ: “I completely disagree with what she has to say about Caitlyn in relation to why she is making her show.
“It’s a shame to see an instance of feminism and trans issues diminishing each other. But also, it’s quite important that this is a singular instance, and most feminists ally with the transgender. But specifically, I just disagree with her.”
Well it’s always great to have a man explaining about feminism and what it needs to do to come up to his standards.
It’s an interesting juxtaposition: by “lopping off his dick,” Jenner is “inflicting an extraordinary amount of violence upon himself,” for no other purpose than to steal “limelight that the other, female, members of the family were enjoying.”
That’s… some pretty serious commitment right there, I must say.
I would guess he doesn’t know that much about Germaine Greer aside from her most recent controversy, and being a cis man playing a trans role, is making sure his thinking on trans issues is “correct.”
KP, I would further guess that he did some research for this role, and that the overwhelming tone of the contemporary resources he discovered was of the “correct” variety. He seems to be living that new reality now as an informed commenter on trans affairs.
It’s OK to disagree with Germaine Greer (I often do myself); I think the point is that he is explaining to us how to be feminists.
Jen, I never said he didn’t research his role. Maybe I should have been clearer. I personally don’t agree with Germaine Greer’s views on trans people either, but his comments seem opportunistic to me.
I want to know– feminists, for the most part, are constantly making statements that, although the they define gender differently than trans folk do, etc, they strongly support people’s rights to live according to their sense of identity, have their new name and sex legally recognized, marry who they want, and so on…
Do trans activists feel compelled to make similar statements? That, while they see gender as being primarily about a sense of identity, they understand that many women experience gender as a form of oppression, and that society is structured in a way that harms women? Do they worry that people will twist their words if they don’t voice support for feminism?
That, plus the fact that the Indy treats this as somehow worth reporting, plus the jumping on Greer all over again as if she hadn’t already been jumped on 90 thousand times and we just can’t jump on Old Wrong feminists often enough.
KP @ #5–I wasn’t contradicting anything you said, just trying to add to it.

This. This, this, this.
Bending over backwards to be fair, that statement wasn’t Greer’s finest hour… OTOH, thanks for the Mansplainin’, Eddie.
What about women who chop off their boobs? I assume that, like Jenner, they’re inflicting extraordinary violence on themselves solely because they want the attention? And doesn’t this extreme craving for attention prove that they’re still women? In any case, they need their own restrooms. That they whack their boobs off solely to get access to men with their zippers down proves that they’re dangerous.
I cannot stand Hollywood ‘stars’, some of whom aren’t too bright, chiming in on issues they know nothing about.
Simply playing a brain surgeon in a movie doesn’t mean you’ve become an expert in neurology.
