Free Inquiry Announces Two New Columnists
A tweet from Melody Hensley this afternoon:
Free Inquiry Announces Two New Columnists: @pzmyers and @OpheliaBenson
It’s true. See for yourself. There I am right on the front page, along with Christopher Hitchens and Wendy Kaminer. (What? Yes really. Two of your top faves? Yes really. Hitchens and Kaminer? I know.) There I am under OP-EDS.
End of smirk.
Great news! They couldn’t have made better choices.
I do not have enough hand for the amount of high five required.
[returns high five]
Good on ya! That’s great to see. Perhaps I’ll subscribe now! I usually buy them from a local bookstore, but that way I scope it out first, and probably miss some good things when I decide against it. (But they really do charge too much for Canada. I don’t believe it costs them $10 more to send them across the border, and the Canadian dollar has been worth more than the greenback for months.) However, FI made a good bargain when they got the two of you.
Gratzies!
I’ve enjoyed, and learned a lot, from your blogging.
Yippee and woo-hoo! I’ll have to renew my subscription.
Sounds like a big cross-border scam, Eric!
Hooray!
Already a subscriber to F.I., so I’ll just say how pleased I am to see the new choices for columnists. I think they’ll boost their subscribership a wee bit by bringing you two on (P.Z. comes with his throngs of eager Pharyngulators, no doubt). Cheers Ophelia.
I shall have to add this to my subscribing pros and cons list.
Pros: Insightful and interesting writers.
Cons: Would require slightly more work than commenting on a blog.
ps Congrats
Terrific. Congrats.
Congratulations! I read both of you daily and am jazzed about this!
Congratulations! That’s fantastic.
That’s an awesome gig to land. Congrats, Ophelia!
Yea!
…now if only they could get rid of that terrible Point of Inquiry host we all know so well…
When FI mailed out a questionnaire to subscribers about 8 months ago (I think), one of the questions simply asked that I write what kinds of changes I’d like to see in FI. I suggested that atheist bloggers be recruited, and I even mentioned you and PZ (as well as a few others).
So, yes, you may now thank me;)
Congratulations, Ophelia, this is most excellent news.
Kudos, Ophelia! I have to admit I haven’t been a regular reader of FI till now, but with you and PZ both on board, I may have to rethink that.
Congrats Ophelia! I haven’t had a subscription to FI in a while, but this is as good a reason as any to begin reading it again.
Yes!!! OMG OMG! You are so perfectly suited for it. Congratulations!
Oh, and FI should know I’ve been meaning to subscribe for a long time, but it keeps getting put off out of forgetfulness. Adding O was the push; I just subscribed (yes, this very minute).
Well, never read an issue of FI before but given that I just signed up for a year’s worth, situation will be remedied soon. Congrats Ophelia!
Eric, the ten bucks shipping you pay in Canada is probably subsidising my shipping rate. If that helps you feel better …
Congratulations!
I left a congratulatory comment earlier, but it’s disappeared. Congratulations again! This is wonderful and well-deserved.
The only question is what the hell took them so long! Congratulations!
Congratulations, that’s awesome! Haven’t read a single issue. I’ll buy this one. Man, I really have a lot of reading to do.
I’ve been considering subscribing from down under for a while now, and now I’ve got two more reasons. I’d better get off my backside and sort something out…
YAY!!
Congratulations, Ophelia! That’s excellent.
Congratulations!
Darn! Somebody broke their site and I can’t get to it. I guess I’ll just have to believe you without evidence. Congrats!
Lovely! Well done, Ophelia.
Congrats– they couldn’t have made a better choice. Give ’em hell!
Congratulations and good luck.
Brilliant! Well done, Ophelia.
Congrats – well deserved.
Awwwwwwww thanks all!
And Charles Sullivan: thank you in particular. :- )
Congratulations from the other side of the world!
Congrats! And judging from the number of people who are subscribing (or re-subscribing) based on this (myself included), sounds like a win all-round!
Fantastic. Congratulations!
Oh yes. A smirk is a very attractive, convincing argument.
Do you intend to write on anything besides how hard done by you are, how women aren’t taken seriously, how they are afforded no outlets for their inherently brilliant opinions, how unfair it is if men ask them for coffee, etc.? Because that’s all you’ve written about here for some weeks now.
Insightful and thought-provoking it ain’t.
Been out of internet touch for a day and this happens in my absence…….heartfelt Congratulations.
@Greg: seems there’s one in every crowd. If you are dis-satisfied with the blog content………
@Greg
Your argument is similar to the anti-global-warming crowd. It was cold yesterday!
I think youkilled it I can’t get to the site.
If it’s killed it must be PZ who killed it. He gots like 45 times my readership.
Greg – did you seriously think the word “smirk” was supposed to be an argument? Did you think this entire post was supposed to be an argument? Do you not recognize a mere statement of fact when you see one?
Splendid news! Smirk all you want.

There. That’s my smirking for the day.
Congratulations. And well deserved I must say.
“I do not have enough hand for the amount of high five required.” Hmmm. I believe I have heard the general syntax of that sentence before FIN!!???
And congrats, Ophelia! You’ve just inspired me to renew my subscription to Free Inquiry. :)
What can I say, Emily, you’ve got influence. :p
Also, I think I just made the table over from me laugh by trying to physically replicate all of Ophelia’s smirks. :-Z was *particularly* difficult.
Ever since the posting of this story I have been unable to connect to secularhumanism.org from different browsers, different OSes, different locations.
e.g. Firefox can’t establish a connection to the server at http://www.secularhumanism.org
Anybody else having problems?
Oh that Fin. Hi Fin!
Yes, it’s not easy to get one’s mouth to do a Z.
Felix, yes, people were telling me they couldn’t get the page yesterday.
Congratulations!
And I can’t get onto the page either…
Way cool! Break a…er…pencil lead. Or something.
Does anyone here know anyone who knows what is going on with the secularhumanism.org website?
AFAICT it’s been off line for 4+ days.
Is’t bizarre! Is it under attack?
