Catholic church decides sluts deserve cancer
Religion is outdoing itself this week. The good old Catholic Church for instance, always vigilant for the well-being of humanity.
A vaccine against cervical cancer will be given to schoolgirls without them receiving any safe sex advice as a result of a controversial deal struck between the Catholic Church and health officials [in Scotland]…The Catholic Church originally raised objections to the jab on the grounds it could encourage promiscuity, but has made a U-turn after reaching an agreement with health and education bosses. The deal means girls getting the HPV jab will not receive any accompanying advice on the need to use condoms to protect themselves from other sexually transmitted diseases.
Typical. A bogus worry about a bogus guessed-at possibility of a non-problem motivates the church to object to a measure that would protect women against a fatal disease. Healthy sense of priorities they have; sensible view of what matters and what doesn’t. What is ‘promiscuity’ anyway? And what business is it of theirs? What if the vaccine did ‘encourage’ women to have sex with more than one person – so what? Why does it matter? Why does it matter enough to warrant risking their lives by preventing them from getting a vaccination? And why is it up to the Catholic church to intervene? Why do health officials in Scotland have to bargain with the Catholic church at all? Why do they have to ‘strike a deal’?
Health campaigners and parents’ groups last night reacted angrily to the deal, warning that the sexual health of thousands of young Scottish women was being put at risk to avoid a moral backlash from the Catholic Church. Many sexual health experts believe it is essential to give out safe sex advice alongside the jab to make it clear they will remain at risk from other STIs including HIV, chlamydia and gonorrhea. More than half of the 5,000 female chlamydia patients in Scotland last year were under the age of 20.
Well it serves them right you see. The Catholic church wouldn’t want them to just get away with it.
The Catholic Church has now decided it will back the programme, with the jabs being available in its own schools. Spokesman Ronnie Convery revealed: “We have been in fruitful discussion with the health and education authorities, and we are satisfied that the programme to be rolled out across the country now is a responsible and ethically appropriate one.”
That’s disgusting. Immoral, presumptuous, intrusive, reckless, and disgusting. Having sex is not of itself irresponsible (unintended conception is irresponsible, but that’s a different matter); obstructing measures to prevent diseases is grotesquely irresponsible. The smugness of this kind of thing becomes unendurable…’we are satsfied’ indeed! Who cares whether they are satisfied or not! It’s not about them, it’s about the girls. Ronnie Convery isn’t going to get cervical cancer, is he, because he doesn’t have a cervix, and neither do any of the other bastards who decide this stuff.
This is an exceptionally disturbing account of how the catholic church in Scotland intervened in something which is none of their business. It may be naive to expect these people to come to the table to discuss these issues, and even more naive to think that they will ever see sense, but it is surely not naive to think that the public health authority in Scotland should have told the men in frocks to bugger off!
It seems more a case of extortion than anything else. If the public health authority in Scotland had told the churchies to fuck off, they would no doubt have poured all their effort into spreading anti-vaccine propaganda. And in the UK, which is already rife with MMR lunacy, that could very well torpedo the vaccination program permanently.
“Experts warn on cervical cancer vaccination plan” 21 Aug- 2008. http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ ireland/2008/0821/1219243766838.html –
Cervical cancer vaccines may start soon of 12-year-old girls.
Parents must give their consent to having their children vaccinated.

For a small country, which, for the past decade or so, has experienced the mighty roar of the Celtic Tiger – it is absolutely disgraceful that for budgetary reasons alone – it can now afford only to vaccinate girls up to the age of twelve years.
The health service in Ireland leaves so much to be desired.
I wonder too – were Irish RC overseers, like their Scottish cousins – to be had around the chamber tables in deep discussions on this matter!
I must say that’s quite a repugnant title you’ve decided to put on that rant of yours. Or maybe I should use your own words to describe what I think of it “Immoral, presumptuous, intrusive, reckless, and disgusting”.
Come on Keith, wake up and smell the napalm!
The Scottish hierarchy will let ‘its’ girls be vaccinated against HPV so long as they are not told of any other STDs, or how to prevent conception. That is, so long as the assumption is made that they’re not sluts – that is, have sex outside of marriage – they deserve to be protected against cervical cancer. Otherwise, no. They’re just sluts, after all. This is disgusting. It’s ‘immoral, presumptuous, intrusive, reckless and disgusting.’ And it’s downright repugnant, to use your own word.
Who do these people think they are? What right do they think they have to say what these girls should know? The girls deserve to know about sex, to know what it is, what happens if they do not protect themselves, how they can be more careful, etc. etc.
And, while we’re on the subject, these stupid, yes, stupid, men, are the same ones who will say, when one of ‘their’ girls gets pregnant, because they wouldn’t let her be taught about sex and contraception, that they have to stay pregnant, and bring a child to birth, because it’s ‘their’ (not theirs, you see, the girls’) responsibility, you know. They did it knowingly. Give me strength!
The title was meant to be repugnant, of course. What right does the Catholic church have to risk the lives of people for stupid frivolous reasons?
“I must say that’s quite a repugnant title you’ve decided to put on that rant of yours. Or maybe I should use your own words to describe what I think of it “Immoral, presumptuous, intrusive, reckless, and disgusting”. “
Yes, OB wrote an article, while the Catholic church is continuing to lie about and suppress basic facts of sexual health. These are exactly the same and any equivalency is totally warranted.
Keith,
Please stick around and expand upon your position. Which part of OB’s point was,for example, presumptious?
Yes and while you’re at it tell us exactly what you disagree with in what you call my rant. Do you think what the church calls ‘promiscuity’ is more worth avoiding than cervical cancer is, and if so, why? Why is ‘promiscuity’ so important?
You’re being so unfair. The Catholic Church agreed to a deal whereby virginal girls could get their HPV vaccinations – just so long as none of the girls receive “accompanying advice on the need to use condoms to protect themselves from other sexually transmitted diseases.” Therefore, they don’t think that sluts deserve cancer. They think that sluts deserve HIV, syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea – but not cancer.
Ah now you’re right there – that was sloppy. I was thinking of the evangelicals in the US who do think the sluts should get cancer. No HPV vaccination for them!
I’ll have to fix that.
What right does the Church have to decide that women are better dead than slutty?
And what kind of fucking sociopath do you have to be to take such a view?
And why does Scotland–Scotland!–have to kowtow to the church on these matters? I thought such servility was restricted to the good old U.S. of A.
Don’t forget that Scotland – Scotland! – in the guise of the Tyneside police department kowtowed to the Muslims who didn’t like seeing a police dog puppy in a police hat. Everyone seems to be trying to outdo themselves in Scotland to accommodate to religious believers.
Granted, the case of the refusal of sex education to girls is more serious, but, really, do government agencies have to be so willing to fold, just because a few religious nutters say ‘Boo!’?
The trouble is that, here in Scotland, the RC Church (although a minority) has a very vocal hierarchy that cries “Sectarianism!” at any objection to its sexist and homophobic agenda. It’s tended to be more of a problem for the Labour Party, which historically (since the Conservatives were the ‘Conservative & Unionist Party’) was disproportionately associated with the Irish Catholic diaspora in some parts of the country, but now the SNP admin is having to placate them.
And the puppy business involved Tayside police, not Tyneside, which is in England.
You’re right, of course, just a slip of the fingers!
Huh. I *loved* the title. In absence of anything particularly brilliant to contribute to the discussion, I hit comment specifically to say so–even before reading the bleating above…
So I’m still saying so. Love the title. And there’s just no accountin’ fer taste.
That was one typo in the quotation from the health officials. They are quoted as saying:
“…he sexual health of thousands of young Scottish women was being put at risk to avoid a moral backlash from the Catholic Church.”
Obviously that should have been an “… immoral backlash from the Catholic Church.” I see nothing moral about the Church’s position in this.
Jenavir:
“And what kind of fucking sociopath do you have to be to take such a view?” (“that women are better dead than slutty”)
One like “Jack the Ripper”?
Ratslinger, you die in a fire you mother fucker eater of shit. My sister died from cervical cancer and you have the (well, I don’t know what it is but it sure isn’t “balls”) to say that young women who get Gardasil or whatever the HPV vaccine is called are going to become “whores” and “sluts”. I guess that you beLIEve, along with Mohammad, that the majority of women will go to hell no matter what. You, Ratslinger, who prances around in the sissy dress with the funny hat have a lot of nerve.
Guess what, Nancy Boy: In high school, I discovered that the easiest lays were the Catholic girls – it was their way of rebelling against your obscene, misogynistic teachings.
And let’s not forget your baby-raping, kiddy-fiddling priests. You, the Bishops, the Cardinals, the pervert priests, and all the other minions of your vile, criminal organisation, need to be locked up in a cage forever. Or better yet, kicked to death by a horde of angry women and abuse victims for your crimes against humanity.
chlamydia can give you lots of painful and itchy moments so always practice safe sex.-“
