Freedom From Atheism
Update on last Comment –
And there is the Supreme Court decision (or non-decision) in the Pledge of Allegiance case. Students will go on invoking the deity in public (state) schools for now, thus making sure we don’t go overboard with this separation of church and state stuff. Don’t forget, freedom of religion does not mean freedom from religion, any more than Adam and Eve means Adam and Steve. No, religion is still mandatory in God’s country. (Of course, the Pledge is not actually required, so young atheists can just refuse to recite it and laugh cheerily when their devout classmates beat them up in the playground. Ain’t liberty grand.)

HIGH COURT BLOCKS BID TO REMOVE ‘GOD’ FROM ‘GOD DAMN IT’
Decision Protects Popular Profanity
By a 9-0 margin, the U.S. Supreme Court decided yesterday to block a bid to remove the word “God” from the popular profanity “God damn it.”
The decision came in response to a lawsuit from a California doctor, Steven Lapelle, who had argued that the inclusion of the word “God” in the phrase violated the constitutional separation of church and state since “God damn it” is one of the most frequently used phrases in Washington.
In writing for the majority, however, Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist made it clear that the word “God” in “God damn it” was very much here to stay.
“Without the phrase ‘God damn it,’ it is highly unlikely that our Federal government would continue to function in a smooth, efficient manner,” wrote Justice Rehnquist. “As for Dr. Lapelle, I suggest he mind his own goddamn business.”
But the California doctor remained undaunted by the Court’s ruling, telling reporters that he would proceed with a new lawsuit to remove the word “hell” from the phrase “Who the hell do you think you’re talking to?”
If that suit is successful, Dr. Lapelle said he would pursue his ultimate goal, which is to remove the words “God” and “hell” from the phrase “Get the hell out of my goddamn face.”
In other Washington news, one day after former President Bill Clinton paid a visit to the White House, twenty White House interns were released from the basement where they had been locked for the duration of his stay.
“No, religion is still mandatory in God’s country”
Is that the single most frightening thing about US evangelists? The idea that the USA is somehow anointed by God, it scares the bejeesus outa me, it takes the nuttiness of British or african evangelicals and adds an even more sinister twist!
“No, religion is still mandatory in God’s country”
That statement wouldn’t be the slightest bit scary but for that sinister coma after “No”. With the coma of course, it is every bit as horrendous as you say.
Borowitz thing hilarious.
I supppose you meant comma, but coma seems to fit…
Borowitz thing extremely hilarious, as I just got into it with a doctor who got on my case for saying “that goddamn job,” in a private room where no old folks were present. By the time I got done with him, he had his tail between his legs. Anyway, glad I don’t have to say the pledge in school any more…but wonder where it’s all going to end…
