The world has arguably been through worse extinction events than even Trump could organise. eg the Chicxulub asteroid impact which arguably set off the Cretaceous/Paleogene mass extinction (at 66 million years ago) which wiped oy the non-avian dinosaurs, and cleared the way for the rise of our class Mammalia..
In order for any of us to be around today, the right sperm cell (300 million in the average male ejaculation) has to meet up with the right ovum (400,000 available per pubescent female.) So the odds against any of us individuals ever having been born are staggering, But that gigantic improbability is repeated for the existence of each of our two parents, four grandparents, eight great-grandparents, going back as far as you like in our individual pamily trees, taking in Cromagnons, Neanderthals, apes, monkeys etc etc back as far as you like in time..
Even if we all disappeared and all carbon dioxide and methane producing activity ceased tomorrow, the rise in global average temperature is inexorable. It will continue to rise. So do we throw up our hands and say we’re fucked, so let’s take a Disney Cruise on the Arctic Ocean in November?
We still can mitigate the damage somewhat and there are several things that can be done, and need to be done to reduce the damage so that in a century the earth may return to a degree of normalcy. But, capital needs to be involved, and so while there are ways to control the amount of carbon released into the atmosphere and absorbed by smart investing in technologies. The Climate Rebels podcasts are hosted by Real Estate enterpreneurs who focus on buying commercial and multi-family buildings and retrofitting them to be green, realizing that tearing buildings down and replacing them involves large scales of carbon release. Even if they are replaced by “green” buildings, that doesn’t offset the damage of building new. They have great guests who are experts in a variety of specialties and listening has been elightening.
There is a great deal of greenwashing by corporations, my most recent employer being among them, but this crew is working towards funding real efforts to reduce the damage. They say that as an industry, real estate is responsible for more than 40% of the carbon load on the atmosphere and it’s going to be a key area to modernize in order to reduce the damage of climate change. We have to re-think almost everything we do.
Human race is doomed. What does it even matter if Trump becomes President again? sigh.
