Sea to shining sea
Much of the US is under an extreme heat warning. Really much of it.
Some of it has been for weeks.
July has been ROUGH!
How's everyone holding up?
Every single day this month has hit 110 or higher. Last week was the hottest of the stretch, with highs at 116-119 every day.
More 110+ days this week.

Tomato workers near Firebaugh CA worked under an excessive heat warning with temps expected to reach 115°. Since the tomatoes need to be picked before they ripen, they started their day at dawn and only worked until noon to avoid the hottest part of the day. #WeFeedYou #CALOR pic.twitter.com/jGIAPFzF4A

Some lefty website asked why there aren’t people out in the streets calling for a serious response to this catastrophe. I would say the reason is that the people who go to street marches and protests and rallies are discouraged from the internalized understanding that decades of peaceful marches pretty much had zero impact on things.
And the majority of the population doesn’t go to rallies or marches or protests and when it’s a warm day in November they smile about the “beautiful” weather.
Here in the DC area too. High nineties, maybe break 100 over the next three days. And humid, of course. Good time to stay inside.
But even more disturbing is our lack of any real winter over the past few years. I don’t recall the last time I had to shovel snow, and I didn’t even break out my winter coat and hat last winter.
Me, I don’t know. The people I know who go to street marches are very positive if one person drives by and honks for a sign that says “honk if you like choice” or something. They just keep organizing them. We have so many pride marches in our town, and we have a small population, mostly fanatic Trumpistas. They keep trying, banging their heads against a brick wall.
During the early days of the Iraq war, students turned out in mass for protests and marches. They didn’t turn out for any environmental protests or marches. There were some big ones in big cities, but for the most part, people don’t seem to protest or march for that unless you happen to have a current guru to lead them.
I remember in 2007. Everyone said “we all believe in global warming now”. Newt Gingrich was making infomercials with Nancy Pelosi. It was during the period that An Inconvenient Truth was in the theatres. Now? Back to the old way of doing things.
And when I point out global warming, I get a handful of regurgitated responses. “There are really immediate important things. I’ll work on that when we [get abortion back] [get world peace] [get a Baskin Robbins in town][.” “A few degrees warmer is good.” “Plants will grow better.” (I already expressed my disdain for that idea in an earlier post). “Nothing I can do, I’m just one person.” “Warmer? Really? I haven’t noticed.”
I think that last one has a lot to do with it. Air conditioners have kept people from realizing it. The young people I know don’t realize it was ever cooler. The older people tell me it’s just a cycle, they remember this really hot year when they were little and no one went bonkers about it.
The changes required to say he/she pronouns backward requires little sacrifice. The changes required to deal with global warming are immense.
Heat advisory in Madison,WI today.
The past couple months have actually been mild compared to recent summers. Except for the drought, of course.
I just want my childhood weather cycles back.
