They don’t make’em like they used to
First
A couple of points.
One, his claim is stupid and wrong. There are some surface resemblances, but the actual substance is very different.
Two, it’s quite staggering how bad he is at professional talking. That’s what professors do, it’s the “profess” in “professional” and “professor” – they talk well. This buffoon does it almost as badly as Kathleen Stock’s hilarious interlocutor at the Oxford Union. A million “kind of”s and almost as many “you know”s. He talks fast instead of well, and the result is a machine-gun delivery of stuttering and repetition with very little content. Why did Oxford make him an endowed professor?
I guess he’s not a very good historian, then. Maybe they could consider leaving the chair empty until they find a candidate who actually knows history rather than one who just makes it up.
He mentions “predatory behavior, a danger to children, a threat to the national fabric … and deceit” as similar charges laid against both homosexual and transgender people, but the contexts of those concerns is quite different. The predatory behavior in the second case is about concerns women have around men, which is considered justified. The danger to children involves medical interventions and the “threat” gay people wielded didn’t involve epistemology.
As for deceit, homosexuality is equivalent to regularly engaging in homosexual behavior, which is clear enough. Transgender behavior, which consists of insisting you’re not your sex and demanding to be treated as whatever it is you think you are, is not necessarily the same as being transgender. It could just mean you’re somebody insisting you’re not your sex.
There must be a lot of trans being beaten and hauled off to jail. Oh, wait, some of them are in jail…but it’s for raping women, or other crimes. Not for being trans. They can be trans in broad daylight, unlike gays in the 1950s who often married to hide their sexual orientation. That made two lives miserable, since a straight woman being married to a gay man is not a good thing (unless the woman and man choose that because it allows them freedom in other ways).
Trust me on this. I know. I often hear of the unfortunate gay men, forced to marry women to keep out of prison or avoid execution. No one mentions the shit the woman has to deal with, or what it’s like to be a trophy wife for a gay husband, especially when you did not know (a) he was gay; or (2) you were a trophy wife.
It seems to me like it is the trans treating women more like LGB were treated in the 1950s – shaming, ostracizing, attempting to rape lesbians, etc etc etc
Male homosexuality was *illegal* in Britain in the fifties, and later. Men were sent to gaol. He must know this if he is in any way fit to hold his post. He doesn’t mention it because it would upset his glib comparisons. That is shameful.
