Guest post: What one woman saw
Originally a comment by latsot on Not letting women speak.
I know some women who were there, I was seriously worried. They are safe, though! My friend spotted there was going to be violence and managed to take her group away from the crowd before it happened.
One of her friends was beaten, though. I found myself typing “thankfully it was not serious” and while I’m indeed thankful it’s not serious, it appals me that that’s the sort of thing I have to be thankful for.
She reports:
A 70 year old woman being punched in the face.
A child being pushed over so that a trans rights activist could scream more closely in another woman’s face
Two women or one woman and a girl lying on the ground in the middle of the crush as KJK was helped away from the crowd
No police manning the barriers
No police anywhere in the crowd, only a few on the periphery.
A TIM repeatedly flashing his moobs at a young lesbian and seeming to move to occupy the women’s toilets
All of this and more has been corroborated.
And this is what one woman saw with her own eyes.
That’s horrific.
What can be done to protect women wishing to speak to one another when the police fail to keep the violent gangs at bay? When politicians incite violence? And the biggest newspapers refuse to report incidents accurately?
Are you still sure that you would like to attend the Irish event? I’d love to attend the rally in Dublin, but my health is much too fragile. Can I at least contribute to your travel costs? I’d invite you to stay, but I don’t know if you have the time to come to Cork. Hell, you’re welcome anytime!
That’s very kind of you, tigger, but there’s no need. The travel costs are ridiculously low, if I fly and way too expensive and time-consuming if I take the ferry. The only issue is whether or not I can actually get on and off the plane…. and the usual worries about my chair getting damaged by baggage handlers.
I’d love to visit Cork again, I haven’t been for years. And it would be great to meet you. But this will be a flying visit in every sense, I’m afraid.
I’m still determined to go, if I can.
I booked my tickets, so definitely going!
Excellent!
