I used to think that. Not that it was laughable, but that macho men would never be willing to suffer the humiliation of calling themselves women. Then someone told me “Actually, it happens,” and I thought: Oh, OK, if it happens, then that changes everything.
Just a question here — IS there some government official who follows GRC requesters around 24/7 to make sure that those men wear a dress for 90 days straight? Is Tatchell aware of some secret gender police who are on the job 24/7 to weed out pretenders? Or can a man file the paperwork and go right back to dressing and doing anything he wants and simply get his legal fiction government paperwork declaring him a ladee in 90 days?
I see that defense attorneys for a man who raped two women claimed, “If you accept that evidence, that she is transitioning, that she is aiming to continue on that path to becoming female gender, that goes a long way to acquitting her of these charges.” He is currently taking hormones and seeking surgery. Later news is that he was convicted.
I forgot to add: it’s bad enough that he might get some leniency, or he might be incarcerated in a women’s prison, but outright acquittal? Really? Because he claims he’s female?

They are perpetrating one of the most grotesque fictions of all time. Men are not women. They all know this. They are big, fat liars.
Sackbut, if that did lead to acquittal, I suspect we’d see every rapist self-ID as a woman!

Absolutely not, of course. And “dressing as a woman” is not required in any case. The criteria for “living as the opposite sex” are notoriously and deliberately vague. It’s likely that being able to hand over a gas bill with the applicant’s new name on it would be sufficient.
Regardless, there are sexual predators who absolutely would dress “as a woman” for 3 months in order to gain access to women’s and girls’ spaces. One of the most deliberately misunderstood aspects of grooming is the extraordinary lengths men will go to in order to get even very slightly improved access to children. My friend, who was groomed as a child, has described some of this behaviour: she’s spoken about men she knows who have changed jobs, moved across the country and got married in order to gain access to a woman’s children… And they told her that even if they didn’t manage to assault those children, they were happy that they were “softening them up for the next [predator]”.
This is the nature of the long game that sexual predators are prepared to play. What seems to us like a vastly disproportionate amount of effort for infinitesimal gain seems perfectly reasonable to them because their sense of proportion is so wildly skewed by the vast importance they place on their sexual gratification.
Wearing a frock for 3 months? Please. And you know what? I absolutely know men who would dress as women for 3 months just to fuck with the system. I might not be above doing it myself, just to make a point.

Also, I doubt anyone checks for a GRC when you go to the bathroom (pardon me, loo. I let my USA English slip through)…anymore than they check for a penis. When bathroom policies loosen up, and the assumption is that anyone has the right to be there, it’s open season on women…year round. Who’s going to challenge you going into the women’s room? You just want to pee, right? If someone does, you can create a horrible row and call them transphobic, genocidal TERFs. No GRC needed, no dress needed, just anger and righteous indignation. Scuffle ensues. You are hero of the day, woman is silenced, and you haven’t lost your access to women in a very vulnerable spot.
