I am a great admirer of Vernon Lee’s ghost stories. IMO she is up there with M. R. James and Sheridan Le Fanu. She also deserves credit for her early feminism and her opposition to World War One.
Although Lee rejected the gender roles of her time, she always, AFAIK, identified herself as a woman. It is anachronistic to say she was “gender neutral” or “non-binary”. It’s the same nonsense as the “Joan of Arc was trans!” school.
