Male athlete says it’s “fundamentally unfair” to have athletic teams for girls or women.
A Canadian transgender athlete says it’s “reprehensible” that some U.S. states are trying to ban trans women and girls from playing for female sports teams.
Of course he’s a male himself, and competing against women gives him a huge advantage, so that could be why he’s saying that. Just a thought.
“What they’re really doing is fighting for what one might call the non-existent rights of [non-transgender] women and girls, while treating trans girls and trans women as not real girls or women,” said Veronica Ivy, a two-time track cycling world champion.
Yes it’s our old pal Rhys McKinnon, talking about “the non-existent rights” of real women and girls which he wants to replace with the “right” of men and boys to take their places. (What he doesn’t say is that he wants other men not to do this if it means they will be competing against him. He wants the advantage for himself, not for other men.)
“It’s fundamentally unfair,” she told The Current‘s Matt Galloway.
He’s such a comedian. Of course what’s fundamentally unfair is for preening assholes like him to elbow women out of women’s sports, but the CBC is too dim or too cowardly to tell him so.
Republican lawmakers in states across the U.S. have introduced more than 100 bills related to transgender issues this year, according to Human Rights Campaign, the largest U.S. organization fighting for LGBTQ equality. Many of those bills aim to prevent transgender women and girls from competing on women’s and girls’ sports teams.
Proponents of such legislation argue that allowing transgender individuals to play on women’s sports teams gives them an unfair physical advantage over other players.
And why do they argue that? Because it’s true, that’s why.
Ivy called it “unconscionable” that legislators would use these bills to attack children and their right to play with their peers. “This idea that trans women are going to suddenly take over sport has not happened,” Ivy said. “And it’s unlikely to ever happen.”
One, he doesn’t know that, two, it’s easy for him to brush it off because it’s not his ox being gored, three there is no reason women and girls should give up any wins or places on teams to men who claim to be women. It doesn’t matter if it’s only a few (so far), it’s still taking something away from women and girls and giving it to men and boys, when women and girls have rights just as men and boys do.
While Alphonso David, president of Human Rights Campaign, said he appreciates the argument that transgender women may have a natural advantage over other female athletes, “that’s all it is, is an argument.”
“The myth that transgender women are dominant competitors in women’s sports is pure disinformation,” he said.
No it’s not.
“And it’s important to also recognize that this disinformation is dangerous for the health and the safety and the very lives of transgender youth and adults alike.”
What about the health and safety and the very lives of girls and women? Why don’t they matter? Why is it only trans women who matter?
For what it’s worth, VI is not precisely World Champion, or Women’s World Champion. Thays a Womens Masters. In fact, as we bikies say, “Baby Masters” since cycling offers 5-year age classes from 30-34 or 35-39 in all disciplines, including track. There are probably a number of Women’s Elite track sprinters in their 30s who could beat thayself, even with the latter’s headstart on testosterone.
But VI did cherry-pick about the best place in the sport, and one of the best in all sports for a male-bodied person to beat up on the ladies — where sheer anaerobic power matters more than technique, and a sport that severely limits participation by access to a velodrome. Few of the latter in North America, and sadly one fewer with loss of the only velodrome in my state.
One of these two must be wrong…I wonder which one?
VRIM sort of gives the game away here, doesn’t he? Non-existent rights? If sport is a right, and you have that right, why don’t women?
And then you demand to be treated as women and girls are treated? Okay, go make me a sandwich, make sure to wiggle your butt while you’re going. Oh, and I have a lot of laundry that needs to be done, and the windows are dirty. I’ll pay you 70% of what I would pay if you were a male.
My god, he actually said the non existent rights of women an girls. Intentionally, to a reporter. He believes it.
Though I do appreciate that the reporter replaced cis with non-trans, though no modifier at all would have been best.
I do find the outrage at Republicans passing all these bills darkly funny… What did you think was going to happen? They moved on from Obergefell and then you handed them a fucking juicy target. This is one fight the right wingers are going to win.
Don’t throw a culture war if you aren’t prepared to lose.
This highlights a truly shocking situation. Everywhere, there is discrimination to be found. Riders of camels and elephants are not allowed to compete in horse races, on the spurious trumped-up (as distinct from Trumped-up) ostensible excuse for a justification that it might allegedly perhaps perchance scare the bejasus out of the horses, which would then stampede, throw their riders and bolt. Have you ever heard such bullshit?
Men, transwhatever or otherwise, have a better chance of winning if they can be contestants in womens’ events. Enhancement of one’s chances of winning is what the American Founding Fathers had in mind when they wrote the Constitution. On that basis alone, I am sure that the Supreme Court would find barring those with male genitalia from womens’ events to be downright unconstitutional. Not only that, but arguably transphoobic as well.
Now where was I?
Blood, I’ve had similar thoughts. But this:
made me laugh out loud. Admittedly a little too loudly and for a little too long, until people began to look at me strangely, but a laugh’s a laugh.
“… and even if it did happen, it’s still fair because TWAW.”
This argument that “transwomen dominating women’s sport is a myth” is so disingenuous. When black athletes were allowed on previously white teams, advocates didn’t say it was right because “they’re not going to win that much.” They said it was right because they believed it was right.
When gay people wanted to get legally married, advocates didn’t say it was right because “there won’t be that many gay marriages.” They said it was right because they believed it was right.
But now, with trans rights, advocates are saying “there’s not that many of them” and “they have no competitive advantages” even though they believe it’s right because it’s right. If a transwoman is a kind of woman, then it wouldn’t matter if 80% of all men “discover” they’re women, or 80% of all women’s sports teams consist of trans women, who hold 100% of the records. Whether it’s “unlikely” that transwomen will take over women’s sports or not makes zero difference to their argument. They’re just hoping it will allow us to allow the camel’s nose into the tent, and whatever happens, happens.
The Human Rights Campaign is NOT an “organization fighting for LGBTQ equality.” They have jettisoned LGB altogether, except for colonizing the political cachet of the gay rights movement. No, HRC is “the largest U.S. organization fighting for TQ supremacy.”
