What is “gender?” What is the meaning of the word “gender” in the phrase “gender identity?”
How are you defining “man” and “woman?” What is the difference between a man and woman?
What would falsify the existence of an innate gender identity present from birth?
Why does gender identity outweigh the cumulative effect of DNA, chromosomes, gametes, genitals, and hormones in the womb?
What would change your mind?
I consider these type of questions to be critical in understanding and analyzing any claim, including the claims TRAs are making. They’re basic to both philosophy and science. But the above are known as “JAQing off” — “Just Asking Questions” in a way designed to obscure and detract from the real issue. The real issue, you see, is PEOPLE JUST TRYING TO LIVE THEIR LIVES WHY DO YOU HATE THEM SO MUCH????
Ironically, the major complaint made against Richard Dawkins wasn’t Dear Muslima, Clockboy, or anti-trans statements which Removed the Humanity of Marginalized People. . It was that he was trying to prevent people from getting the meaning and comfort of religion. He didn’t understand theology; he didn’t realize how belief in God is a key component of the identity of the religious; he really needed to just sit down and talk to Believers, so he might understand that understanding religion wasn’t about o-so-clever arguments and questions, but how the religious find meaning and purpose and understanding in their lives. Dawkins the atheist needed to Educate Himself.
Sastra @1 “What is the difference between a man and a woman”? This is exactly the right question. I see a lot of people jumping to answer this question without even asking it.
That Richard Feynman quote is apposite: “Reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled.”
I am quite happy as a member of the male persuasion, and have never at any stage of my life wished I had been born female. But if having been born male and for whatever reason found myself wishing I had been born female, I might finish up wanting surgical correction and/or homonal treatment as a way out of the consequences of the perceived terrible mistake Nature had made, which was me.
Hatred of oneself and the perceived as ‘unnatural’ life one is forced to lead because of a perceived calamitous mistake made by Nature is a terrible state to be in. In order to have happy lives, we each have to love ourselves as we are. ‘Love yourself, because if you don’t, nobody else will.’ I’m sure that has been said many times over the years.
If not, it’s been said now. Right here on Butterflies and Wheels.
Sastra, they loathe the question ‘what is the sex (not gender) of a trans man/woman?’ And yes, the fact that ‘JAQing off’ is wheeled out whenever awkward questions are asked is a nice indication of which question must not be asked because their answers are fatal to trans theory. Similarly, ‘Sealioning’. I knew as soon as that term was popularised it would be deployed specifically to shut down reasonable questions; both terms are blatant deflection devices.
Yes, I get both a lot, which might just mean that I’m a big, JAQing off sealion, of course. I also get compared to flat-earthers and climate change deniers on a more or less daily basis. It’s pure well-poisoning.
Usually, the JAQing off accusation is set up at the beginning as an excuse to be pointed at whenever I ask something they can’t answer. The latter is usually deployed at the end of the conversation and followed by a block, like a squid shooting ink to make its escape.
latslot: I am sure there will be a surgical program developed in the near future so you can fully express in PHYSICAL form your inner Sea Lion nature. You are not a mere human. You are a special Sea Lion deep down inside!
Yes.

Till then, he was just being ignorant and mean.

I’m….. not sure it will take all that much surgery, I’m afraid.
