Failed state
It’s so shaming.
Meaning, if they had their druthers, the election would be thrown out and they would make Trump the winner. They would like to cancel a presidential election entirely, and impose a criminal corrupt sadistic evil incompetent man on us for another four years…during a lethal pandemic which he has made vastly more lethal than it had to be.
Shaming.
President Donald Trump’s Republican allies have virtually zero chance of changing the result, only [the chance] to delay by a few hours the inevitable affirmation of Biden as the Electoral College winner and the next president.
There have been no credible allegations of any issues with voting that would have impacted the election, as affirmed by dozens of judges, governors, election officials, the Electoral College, the Justice Department, the Department of Homeland Security, and the US Supreme Court. But Trump is determined to claim he didn’t lose — which he did, significantly — and many GOP politicians either share his delusion or fear provoking his wrath — even if that means voting to undermine democracy.
Both a House member and senator are required to mount an objection when Congress counts the votes. Republican Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri said Wednesday he will object, which will force lawmakers in both the House and Senate to vote on whether to accept the results of Biden’s victory. Other senators — including incoming ones — could still join that effort, which Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has privately urged Republicans not to do.
It’s shaming and disgusting.
They won’t succeed this time, of course.
But what happens in January 2025, if the GOP controls both Houses of Congress but Biden (or another Democrat) wins the presidential election? Do you think that a GOP base that has spent four years fuming about a “stolen” election will gracefully accept Biden’s re-election? Or will they demand that Republican members of Congress repeat this tactic now that they have the votes to force it through? I think we know the answer to that. And will these elected officials somehow have developed the courage to stand up to their base and refuse to take part in a coup? To ask the question is to answer it.
Biden’s win may have saved democracy in America, but I fear that it may be just delaying the inevitable.
Yes. Nightmare.
Exactly, unless the Republican Party changes in dramatic ways (which seems unlikely), the next election won by Republicans seems likely to be the last (somewhat) democratic election ever.
Biden winning a second term will break his own record of the oldest president to be elected, he will be 82. Not sure how that would play out, but I guess we’ll see.
Biden has said he doesn’t intend to seek a second term; my father (a Trumpista) is sure Kamala Harris will be the first woman president. I could live with that…quite happily. I’m just not sure I see that rosy a picture.
Has he? Where? I saw somewhere, I forget where, that he rejected that claim, with emphasis, and says hell no he fully intends to do the whole 8 years.
