He felt it was his duty
More on Pence’s insulting and potentially murderous refusal to wear the mandatory face mask on his publicity stop at the Mayo Clinic:
Vice President Pence responded to criticisms that he defied Mayo Clinic policy by not wearing a mask during his visit Tuesday to the campus, saying he complied with federal guidelines and felt it was his duty to speak to workers at the facility unencumbered by a facial covering.
He said he complied with federal guidelines – but if you’re entering a medical institution which mandates a face mask, you put on the fucking face mask, you don’t say “Wull I’m following the federal rules so you and your staff and your patients just have to suck it up. Literally.”
And how can it be his “duty” to speak to workers at the Mayo Clinic, who are all wearing masks, without a mask, which will put them at risk from him while he is less at risk from them because they are all wearing the masks? What kind of “duty” is that? If he wanted to speak to the workers at the Mayo Clinic his very first duty was to do as he was told, and to wear a mask.
“And since I don’t have the coronavirus, I thought it’d be a good opportunity for me to be here, to be able to speak to these researchers, these incredible health care personnel, and look them in the eye and say ‘thank you.’ ”
But, not to belabor the obvious, he could look them in the eye while wearing a mask. The mask covers the mouth and nose, not the eyes. He wanted them to look him in the mouth, even though he knew that they were more keen to avoid contagion from his mouth and nose than they were to look him in the mouth.
What was he even doing there, except interrupting their already busy work day? Not to mention ragging a lot of Secret Service personnel and journalists into buildings that are normally severely restricting access? What good was it doing for anybody? Is any of them even slightly better off having received his “thanks”? I for one wouldn’t have left my lab just to lay eyes on Pence.
I once hid in a closet to avoid meeting the Queen and Katie Price. :-D
“…speak to workers…unencumbered by a facial covering”, like anyone gives a shit about what that idiot has to say. Hours of Trump’s moronic ramblings are bad enough, aren’t VP’s supposed to keep their stupid mouths shut? This is what worries me, former dumb VP Biden is our only electable option? I think we’re all up the creek without a paddle, no matter what the outcome. I’ll vote for Biden, sure, but only because Obama endorses him, he must know something I don’t. There is no possible way anyone could be a worse president than Donnie Dipshit.
What’s worse, on a personal level, is that I’ve lowered myself to namecalling. Another reason to despise this immature bunch of idiots. My contempt for them is complete.
Donnie Dipshit and Mikey Moron. I’ll be glad when they’re gone.
Sigh. I know. I think Biden is a TERRIBLE choice, and it infuriates me that all the good choices had to drop out while the dud prevailed…and now he’s a dud with a rape accusation. Fanfuckingtastic. I’ll have to vote for him and it’s poison.
I was so hoping Tulsi Gabbard or even Andrew Wang could have muscled it out, but now we’re kinda stuck with the status quo guy. But better than Trump any day of the week
Amy Klobuchar too, I was hoping she would hang in there. The thing I didn’t like about Warren and Buttigeig is their gender pronoun concessions in their twitter profiles, it makes them look fake, and more ingratiating of the foul TRA’s than they probably even are.
I’m feeling the same way about Biden.
And he’s not even a particularly strong candidate.
At this point my best hope is that Trump continues to self-immolate all the way to November.
This lesser-of-two-evils stuff is vomit in my throat.
I don’t think Trump has any choice but to be the stupid ass that he is. This is his lot in life, he will continue to be an offensive stupid spoiled shit until the day he dies. This definitely will hurt his reelection hopes, given that any Trumpies are paying a lick of attention, or give half a shit. But yeah, give me someone who is intelligent and mature to vote for, and isn’t doing the corruption dance, or being a misogynist bastard. Good luck with that. Biden ain’t it, but Trump is always worse, so we get zero choice this election, no one of good character, and no one of adequate intelligence.
Yes, the fact that Biden is far from being a particularly strong candidate is part of why it’s so infuriating that he is the candidate anyway. Why do the Dems keep doing this??
The problem was that there weren’t any strong candidates… we needed another Obama but no one else could put together the support needed even to win the primary. It’s a popularity contest, not a job interview.
Doesn’t really matter anyways, the president wouldn’t be doing anything excepting issuing EOs with a likely Republican GOP. Hopefully he decides that he’s done after a year or two.
Sorry if this comes off as mansplaining or similar…
Good question. I don’t know. Maybe fear of change? Biden is a known quantity, no matter how corrupt or lacking in character he is. He’s not a great communicator, not polished or well spoken, apparently has a penchant for sexual harassment, not particularly bright, and is obviously a greedy opportunist (especially when it comes to Hunter and others in his orbit). Dems have accepted this and can’t seem to manage demanding more. All I can figure is that there as many Old Guard liberals as there are conservative Wing Nuts.
Lemme revise that, it’s a popularity contest in certain shitty areas of the country that hold waaaaay too much electoral power… everywhere else doesn’t matter one lick.
Maybe the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds weren’t available?
Was this one occasion or two? Because if it was one I really want to know what brought HRH and Katie ‘Jordan’ Price together in one place.
Both together. I know it sounds like a weird combo. It was when I was at Moorfields, they were opening a new ward. Brenda was doing her usual thing, Price was there because she has a blind son and so she does some charity work for the Royal Society for the Blind.

Haha I scrolled straight down all the comments after Claire’s @#2 because there was only one thing on my mind. AoS beat me to it but I can’t believe it took until #15 before someone asked.
I guess I would have to concede that there were no stronger candidates, because none of the field was strong enough to beat Biden. I don’t understand it. There wasn’t even time for all the ridiculous weighted superdelegates to put their thumbs on the scale for the establishment candidate, like happened last time. I wouldn’t even call the Democratic establishment liberal, as they have moved far to the right, to become the less-successful set of corporate lackeys.
Liberal ideals have no home in the present system, and haven’t had for some time.
None of the candidates were strong enough to beat Biden in a series of “plurality vote” local elections restricted to those who chose to vote on a Democratic ballot. That’s a very different question in reference to the general election.
Biden is not the nominee. The party chooses the nominee, which I think is how it should be, and that happens at the convention. But pressure has mounted to make the selection process more “democratic”, attaching undue significance to these unsynchronized local restricted participation popularity contests. Now the party has little choice but to continue with Biden.
A few years ago, here in Alabama, the person who emerged as the Democratic candidate for Chief Justice, after a primary with no serious candidates, was a real wackaloon. The party sought and was granted permission to replace him. The lawyer who replaced him fought a great campaign and almost defeated Roy Moore. The party, for once, ensured that a candidate supposedly representing its goals actually did so.
Claire’s video link didn’t work for me but I found this photo on the same site, they are callously disregarding social distancing and not wearing masks!

@Mike Well, it was 2007 so such things as President Donald Trump and a ravaging pandemic would have been dismissed as some kind of dystopian fiction.
Claire, what is the difference between President Donald Trump and a ravaging pandemic? Give up? I can’t tell the difference either, except the pandemic isn’t consciously malevolent.
