Most upsetting
So many replies come to mind…
Someone should tell self-important anti-gun doctors to stay in their lane. Half of the articles in Annals of Internal Medicine are pushing for gun control. Most upsetting, however, the medical community seems to have consulted NO ONE but themselves. https://t.co/oCR3uiLtS7

Doctors should consult the NRA before diagnosing gunshot wounds?
I spent about 25 years of my life as a trauma surgeon in urban American hospitals. It’s true – I never once thought about consulting with the NRA while working in blood so deep my socks were soaked through the booties. I treated quit a few police officers and a few perps. A lot of poor people and depressed teens. Lots of violent crime victims and many unintentional GSW victims, the youngest was 5 years of age. Pistols, shotguns, varmint rifles, long rifles, assault rifles, even muskets on two occasions. Occasionally had to wear armored gloves to avoid cutting myself on frangeble slugs that are outlawed by the Geneva Convention. Experienced first hand what a supersonic shock wave does to a liver. Participated in my share of mass casualty events. Even thinking about it brings back olfactory memories of iron and corruption. We got very good at treating these injuries. Experience will do that. Before Iraq and Afghanistan military doctors trained with us.
Your lobbying has been effective – we live in a nation where it’s unlikely any of my colleagues will lack penetrating injury experience for the foreseeable future.
So forgive me NRA if I didn’t consult with you before I worked to mitigate your lobbying efforts. My profession is guilty of that – even my diabetology associates failed to get the permission of the soda lobby before they counseled their patients about sugar consumption.
Clearly, more “My gun defended me from my tumor” stories are needed…for balance.
Wait, isn’t the NRA a medieval community that consults no one but themselves?
Gloomily, I’d have thought a gun to the head of a 20-45 year is minimum half a dozen organs? When I was in CA the doctors were some of the largest lobbyists against motorcycle helmets.
Seriously, the NRA should pay for more medical research…otherwise they might run out of members since they will all get shot (and shoot some of us while they’re at it!).
That’s true, but from what I’ve heard, the folks who put together the nutrition pyramid have. And the dairy lobby. And the meat lobby.
It’s almost as if doctors are well positioned to witness and collect gunshot statistics or something…
Actually, mainstream advice to diabetics is still repeating terrible ideas extrapolated from limited science of 50 years ago. Recommended carbohydrate consumption is based on the averages for non-diabetics.
