Keynote indeed
Greedy foul-mouthed pussy-grabbing racist misogynist pig Donald Trump is giving the keynote at the “Values Voter Summit” on Friday. Yes that’s right, Mr Worst on Almost Every Category One Can Think Of is going to lecture people on “values.” Of course they don’t mean values as normally understood, they mean values as in “hate gay people” and “bully immigrants.”
The anti-LGBTQ Family Research Council, labeled as a hate group by the SPLC, has hosted its annual summit since its inception in 2006.
“Values voters have waited eight years for a leader who puts America’s mission first and respects the values that made America into a great nation,” the council’s president Tony Perkins said in a statement reported by The Hill.
Well there was the genocide and the slavery and the slavery-replaced-by-vagrancy-laws, true, but those aren’t really the values that made the US a great nation. Rich, maybe, but not great.
What mae the USA great in the eyes of most of the world was not it’s wealth or it’s military might. It was the principles that it aspired to and therefore gave room for others to aspire to. Now that the Republicans have taken a blow torch to those it puts the USA into the class of ‘another arsehole state’. Let’s hope that is a short-term state of affairs.
“Value” has more than one meaning. Perhaps Trump mistook the event for some sort of real estate seminar. That’s the sort of “value’ that’s closest to what passes for a heart in that orange heap of greed.
I’m more concerned about the word “mission”. America has a mission?
Christ.
Was it? I mean, to me (having two of the eyes of most of the world) it seems perfectly clear that America is and has always been all about the might. The poorly-interpreted aspirations of centuries-dead white land- and slave-owners and indigenous-people-slaughterers don’t count.
The rest of the world is conflicted. We are terrified of what you’re going to do next and at the same time desperate to follow you into nazi hell.
But – seriously – nobody outside the US ever gives the slightest thought about your ‘principles’. We know about your record of behaviour and we’re shit scared about what you’ll do next.
I always thought that what made the US great in the eyes of the world was the music.
OK, ears.
Latsot and WaM, that’s all true of course, but I’d still argue that despite all of the USA’s faults and hypocrisy, it’s defence of freedom and support for a global system of laws, the way Presidents used to speak out on human rights, and the values it’s thinkers used to espouse were all of great value. They provided hope, inspiration and a higher goal for those without to aspire to. That all earned the USA some good will and forgiveness for all the times they didn’t live up to their own rhetoric. Bush W and Trump have done their best to burn all that to the ground though.
