Trump on June 27:
HOUSE REPUBLICANS SHOULD PASS THE STRONG BUT FAIR IMMIGRATION BILL, KNOWN AS GOODLATTE II, IN THEIR AFTERNOON VOTE TODAY, EVEN THOUGH THE DEMS WON’T LET IT PASS IN THE SENATE. PASSAGE WILL SHOW THAT WE WANT STRONG BORDERS & SECURITY WHILE THE DEMS WANT OPEN BORDERS = CRIME. WIN!

Trump on June 30:
I never pushed the Republicans in the House to vote for the Immigration Bill, either GOODLATTE 1 or 2, because it could never have gotten enough Democrats as long as there is the 60 vote threshold. I released many prior to the vote knowing we need more Republicans to win in Nov.

“REPUBLICANS SHOULD PASS GOODLATTE II” and “I never pushed the Republicans to vote for Goodlatte II.” He’s such a cheerful unrepentant liar that he doesn’t even delete his own tweet before contradicting it.
The big question for me is, why don’t his followers care he lies all the time?
Because he lies for them. He says what they think, and what they want to hear, and they don’t care if it’s true. Besides, he “triggers libs”.
He is really fixated on the filibuster, isn’t he? His problem isn’t that he can’t get 60 votes, it’s that he probably can’t get even 50 votes on half-arsed super racist immigration bills. If he’d settle for vaguely professional quietly racist immigration bills he’d probably have one on his desk, but nope…
But doing something in a vaguely professional way would be a defeat! It would mean admitting that the modus operandi of a lifetime is less than perfect.
How do we know what ‘his followers care?’ We’re still seeing empty pieties about Rust Belt Blue Collar Angst. We still get ‘if only Bernie….’ fantasies from prominent sources. We see the trolls online, and in the streets; we still see ghastly poll numbers; but that visible presence is generated by the same mechanisms that dismissed Trump’s threat right up to November ’16.
John @5 – I don’t know what your sources of information are, but I live right in Trump central. I hear from his followers every day. I have lunch in the same cafes. I shop at the same grocery stores. I patronize the same banks, doctors, and movie houses. And they are not quiet. All you have to do around here is sit quiet and listen to what those around you are saying, and you realize that they don’t care if Trump is telling the truth, they care only if they agree with it. Sometimes they even admit it isn’t true, but acknowledge that they believe it, anyway. (Go figure…)
I was staying in a motel in the past couple of months that had Fox News on in the breakfast room. The conversations around the political scene were…educational…
