The Dads don’t get a say???
Well, that’s blunt.

Note the hidden premise in “Well you’ve really done the Irish LGBT community a huge disservice. Thanks for making adoption an even more difficult prospect for them.” The hidden premise is that people’s desire to adopt children is a reason to force women to bear those children against their wills. That’s the issue here: forcibly preventing women from ending their own pregnancies. The hidden premise behind that is that women have no right to make decisions about their own bodies, that women don’t own their own bodies, that women are a public resource first of all, and owe childless people who want children their pregnancies and deliveries.
Note the hidden premise in “Oh, and for the straight guys? The Dad’s don’t get a say???” The hidden premise is that a guy who ejaculates inside a woman should “get a say” in what she decides to do about the resulting pregnancy, i.e. that he gets to veto her decision to end the pregnancy. It still happens inside her body and not his, but he gets to decide that she may not opt out.
Note the hidden premise behind all of it, which is that women aren’t fully people the way men are, because the world at large has a stake in their pregnancies that trumps women’s stake in their own bodies, rights, lives, plans, autonomy, equality, everything.
Besides, there is no shortage of children awaiting adoption in whichever country you look. A very small proportion of them will find adoptive parents.
Amazing how this person feels able to display all his illogic and forecast the future on the basis of knowing nothing at all about facts.
Oh, but a lot of those aren’t babies! They are already children. And they might not be white. And they might have some sort of disease or disability…
No, far better to bring more children into the world to make sure you get the baby you want, with the right type of mother, the right type of father, and get to observe their entire growing up without missing a single year.
As for the fathers…I think male seahorses should have a say in the fate of a pregnancy in the female seahorse. Since the female seahorse transfers the babies to him for delivery, it seems only fair. When males have been genetically engineered so all fetuses not wanted by the mothers can be transferred to the fathers to complete gestation and delivery, then it is time to give the fathers a say.
If men were really, genuinely, concerned about the potential moral and logistical entanglements that can arise from pregnancy, they wouldn’t have sex. I mean, if you’re that concerned about the possibility that your rights as a father might be capriciously taken from you by some woman, you wouldn’t put yourself in that situation in the first place, amirite?
Have the courage of your convictions, dudes.
Or is it possible that this bullshit isn’t really about men’s rights?
Not very deeply hidden though…
The resulting debate here in NZ (abortion, although reasonably readily available, is covered by the Crimes Act) has included people openly saying that women give up choice when they have sex. The old adoption shortage also gets trotted out. As Maureen says, we actually have plenty of children who could be adopted. It’s just that the majority are not cute little babies, and/or they’re brown, and/or they come with physical or mental baggage either as a result of drawing the short genetic straw or parents drug or alcohol abuse.
Most adopters are middle class white couples. They want a pretty, perfect, white baby. That is I know a generalisation, but it’s a true enough generalisation.
Source: I used to be good friends with a social worker for a government agency that dealt with trying to place kids in foster or adoptive care.
No, you’re right, I should have said unstated premise. It’s hiding in plain sight.
At the Planned Parenthood clinic where I volunteer, the protestors have recently started adding in a declaration to the women entering that they have ‘people willing to adopt right here’. Keep in mind, this is typically a group of about 5-10 white forty+ dudes who, even on their best days, would make me (a 40+ white dude with long hair and copious facial hair) a tad nervous on an elevator.
Oddly, not a single woman has taken them up on this kind offer.
We’ve seen the MoV for Repeal… The Dad’s damn well did get a say…
Men who have caused a pregnancy are not “dads”. Everyone knows that, including shitbags who don’t think women should be making decisions about their own bodies. That’s why people say things like “Congratulations, I’ve heard you’re going to be a dad” before children are born.
Based on the results of the vote, the implication that dads didn’t get a say is statistically impossible.
This is a new one for me. Maybe they should visit Lumos (https://www.wearelumos.org) for some enlightenment. The world has plenty of children in need of a home.
Even if the vote were closer, they would have gotten a say. They might have said “no”, but been outvoted.
Personally, I don’t think a thing like this should be subjected to a vote. I do not think anyone’s rights should be subject to the whim of the majority. At least it went the right direction…this time.
