At all costs
The Post has more on the RNC plan to save Trump by vilifying the Republican former FBI director.
With the Mueller probe escalating — including the FBI raid this week of Trump’s personal lawyer’s home and office in Manhattan — Comey’s media appearances could pose a major public relations challenge for the White House.
“I’ve been around politics a long time, and I know fear when I see it,” said Jim Manley, a lobbyist and former senior aide to former Senate minority leader Harry M. Reid. “This White House reeks of fear. … This shows me that they are prepared to use a scorched-earth strategy to undermine the FBI’s credibility. The party of law and order has become the party of trying to protect Trump at all costs.”
That’s the part that’s so astonishing – Republicans pissing all over a Republican prosecutor turned Deputy Attorney General in the Bush 2 admin turned FBI director. You can’t get much better Republican cred than that! Yet they’re willing to go on the record calling him Lyin’ Comey in a desperate attempt to defend the lying cheating thieving corrupt bullying pussygrabbing fraud that is Donald Trump. It’s like turning away from a meal prepared by a four star French chef to jump into a cesspit to pluck out and eat a Big Mac.
Except it’s not even like that because this will be on their record forever. They’re placing all their bets on corrupt incompetent bullying monstrosity. It seems a tad shortsighted.
They’re counting on being the ones who write the history books. They intend to win, and they don’t care at what cost…even if the cost is the country they are constantly god-blessing.
“It’s like turning away from a meal prepared by a four star French chef to jump into a cesspit to pluck out and eat a Big Mac.”
It’s not just that, but they hired the chef themselves; he was one of them. They are now saying he’s no good at cooking anything at all. And that cesspit Big Mac for which they are now so desperate, was cooked by someone whose previous restaurants were closed down for food poisoning.
I know that no analogy is perfect, but you’re missing some realy wonderfully awful dimensions that go much farther in capturing the remarkable terribleness of Republican behaviour. It would be a shame for any of that horrible awfulness to get away unscathed and uncondemned.
Good point.
That’s the thing about Trump – he’s so awful according to so many criteria that it’s truly difficult to nail them all at one time without boring everyone into a stupor.
He’s a genuine one-off that way.
If they are counting on being the ones who write the history books, they’re nuts.
Yeah, they’re not even pretending to represent the whole populace. They’re a white nationalist party, committed to remaining in power through voter suppression, gerrymandering, and propaganda, so the majority of districts have a majority of voters who will back them out of bigotry and ignorance. If you’re not white and in an age group they can count on, you’ll be dismissed and abused in their media and, if you can vote at all, you’ll be sorted into districts where your vote is wasted in one way or another. If you make noise about it, they’ll paint themselves as the victims and whine about free speech.
The Republicans who can’t quite stomach this are drifting out, but their numbers aren’t large and it’s still remarkable how much they’ve been able to stomach so far. Paul Ryan got caught between the stools of genuine integrity and calling out Trump consistently and being a loyal courtier, ending up without the advantages of either.
“Paul Ryan got caught between the stools …”
When I started reading this sentence, it wasn’t furniture that came to mind…
