There is no law now
He did it. That racist lawless sack of shit pardoned Arpaio. Judges might as well not bother while he’s in the White House.
Arpaio, who was a sheriff in Maricopa County, Arizona, was found guilty of criminal contempt last month for disregarding a court order in a racial profiling case. Arpaio’s sentencing had been scheduled for October 5.
“Not only did (Arpaio) abdicate responsibility, he announced to the world and to his subordinates that he was going to continue business as usual no matter who said otherwise,” wrote US District Judge Susan Bolton in the July 31 order.
Including a federal judge, and that sack of shit in the oval office just endorsed him. It’s a dictatorship. A racist dictatorship.
Forget, for the moment, about Russia. About firing Comey. About Charlottesville and North Korea and his general unfitness for office. If you can, put all that aside and pretend that, up until now, we’ve had a garden-variety establishment Republican in the White House this year.
This pardon, by itself, would be an impeachable offense.
The President is obligated to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States. Arpaio was found, by a court of competent jurisdiction, to have systematically abused his power to violate the Constitutional rights of Americans. When ordered to knock it off, he continued to do so, which is an entire additional level of disregard for the Constitution.
With this pardon, Trump is saying that’s all fine. Go ahead and violate the rights of minorities. Defy the judiciary. I got your back.
This pardon condones the repeated abuse and defiance of the Constitution, and sends a message to other law enforcement officers or other government officials that they can do so, too.
This isn’t “only” about whether an 85-year-old man goes to prison or not. It’s about whether the Constitution has any meaning any more. If sheriffs can thumb their noses at court orders, it’s all over. That’s the ballgame, folks.
Yes I don’t particularly want Arpaio to go to prison. I don’t have a high opinion of prisons, especially US ones. But I want him to stay CONVICTED.
I imagine someone told Trump not to pardon Arpaio, that it would be a bad thing to do. That clinched it; if he would make the liberals mad, if it is something Obama (or any other former president) would never do in a million years, then by god, he was going to do it.
Haven’t Trump’s advisers worked out the “reverse psychology” trick that works so well with other toddlers?
“You should totally pardon Arpaio, liberals would love that.”
“Hey, you know what Obama *really* hates? Climate change research and the reporting of the results.”
I can’t see how this wouldn’t work.
Sorry, iknklast, somehow I missed your post.
Great minds thinking alike, I guess. Obviously not great enough to read the comments thoroughly before posting, though ;)
I thought the great advance of America was that it took rule away from kings? Well, nevermind.
Charlottesville should’ve been the nail for me, but as it turns out this is it. I have a grandmother and a father who will *never* hear from me again unless by some miracle they repent of their many sins…
And just think…
…it’s nowhere but down from here.
Just imagine how down things will get. The mind boggle.s.
Can’t believe I’d be around to see the demise of US Democratic Republic. One tends to think they won’t witness huge historical events. I can almost believe I was cursed to live in interesting times.
Will there even be an election in 2020? Even with high level Republicans turning on him in droves, he gains power and prestige. It’s becoming very difficult just to get out of bed in the morning.
Ophelia,
I most definitely want Arpaio to go to prison. I want him to be put in a 120-degree cell with a half bottle of water and a packet of crackers and we’ll check back in a week and see how he’s doing. In a just world, that man would die slowly and in terrible pain and misery and degradation.
