The treaty is somewhat obscure
Trump’s side hustle of trying to annex Canada:
When U.S. President Donald Trump last spoke with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Trump pointed to a 1908 treaty as apparent ammunition to support his threats of a tariff war and his envisioned takeover of Canada.
Trump’s reference to the 116-year-old treaty regarding the Canada-U.S. border reportedly took Trudeau and his office by surprise, sending staff searching for the pact online as the leaders spoke on the phone. That’s not a surprise. The treaty is somewhat obscure in terms of the historical relationship between the former British colonies that became Canada and the United States of America.
Spoiler: it nowhere says the US gets to swallow Canada.
This seems on-brand. Dumb far-right conspiracy theorists love to latch onto obscure things they come across while googling for glory, and pretend like they’ve uncovered Da Vinci Code-like significance within them. I’ve discovered that this little-known treaty from 1908 unlocks the secret that proves the US-Canada border is a sham! Shit like this spreads through right-wing Facebook circles like… well, like measles apparently does again as of late.
It’s the ultimate cringe that this bullshit is shared by the President of the United States now.
It’s ultimate cringe all day every day here.
No kidding @2. We can’t look at any media without Trump or Musk headlines. They are fighting for how much attention they can get with either the attempt to dismantle the US government, or globally trying to out-colonize the colonizers (or some stupid thing). It looks like an utter chaos to me. Instability created by people with unstable minds. The scary thing is who’s going to stop these idiots, and how? I can’t help but think of the original intent of the Second Amendment, and in what kind of situation the 2A will be executed. Interesting times.
And by the original intent of the 2A, I mean the *federal overreach* part specifically.
If Trump might not like the can of worms he’s opening in reaching for ideosyncratic interpretations of obscure treaties for supporting…anything. There are scores of treaties that are a whole lot clearer that the United States signed with scores of Native American Nations that have been broken again and again. Panama might have a word or two to say if he decides to retake the Panama Canal. If treaties can be broken at will, then America’s word means nothing. How does that make America “Great”, apart from it means that it no longer feels bound by any restraint or norm? That’s just licentiousness and “might makes right”: it’s sociopathy on a national scale. But that’s what “Trumpism” is. That’s all Trumpism is. Though calling it an “ism” gives it more credibility and coherence than it merits. It’s really nothing but the gratification of the appetites and grievances of one shallow, ignorant, thin-skinned narcissistic man. Hardly a blueprint or program by which to build and run a country, but a great recipe for destroying one.
If DJT is so intent on breaking every institution of governance, how does he think he can manage or govern huge additional territories?
maddog, Trump doesn’t do ‘how’, he only does ‘now’.
Who needs these so-called “institutions of governance” when your word is law, and you command universal love/respect/fear?
