One less for the women
Awards season is well and truly here, and with it often comes the premise of historical firsts. This year, Karla Sofia Gascón has made history as the first out trans performer to be nominated at the 2025 Screen Actors Guild Awards in a solo category.
The Spanish actress has been nominated at the SAG Awards for Best Female Actor in a Leading Role for her work in Emilia Pérez, making her the first out trans performer to be nominated in a solo category, as per Out Magazine.
In other words, a man has won [been nominated for] an award for best female actor.
As if women don’t have enough trouble getting work and attention and awards in the movie business, now men are stealing actual best woman prizes.
And Pink News is reporting it as a good thing.
Misogynist, and also illiterate – that should be promise.
What can I say? For a man to win a female award he must in all truth be the most outstanding actor in his field.
Well, he hasn’t won yet, but just the fact that he was nominated is outrageous.
I haven’t seen the movie, and have no intention to, but I’ve heard that it’s managed to piss off a lot of people for its stereotypical portrayal of Mexicans in general, along with trans-identified Mexicans. But what can you expect when you have a Spanish actor playing a Mexican in a movie directed by a Frenchman?
Wait — there’s “Out” Magazine?
Then why is it forbidden to “out” a transgender person? They WANT to be “outed.”
That’s the whole point of this performative, exhibitionist, narcissistic, and very public enterprise. There are countless “look at me!” Trans Pride celebratory Days, Weeks, and Months all year. Don’t pretend that trans claims are supposed to be a secret, and that trans people just want to quietly live their lives in the background.
maddog, I think the outrage over ‘outing’ is hyped up to pretend people can’t tell. So few of these men look like women, they don’t need to be outed, but by shouting and screaming whenever someone knows who they are, they can pretend they pass. Just a hypothesis.
Oops derp I got ahead of myself.
He was already nominated for “Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy” at the Golden Globes; didn’t win. It might be marginally OK if the category were “Actor in a Female Role”, but it’s “Female Actor”, which he is not.
It’s not even a female role. He plays a mob boss who mutilates his body so he can pretend to be a woman. (This based on the Wikipedia article; I haven’t seen the movie.)
Talk about having it both ways…
