Eight separate stories about one drag queen.
Why?
Meanwhile, it took our paper two days before it ran an obit of Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul, and Mary.
I could understand it if the stories were published over a large time period. Publishing that many different stories at nearly the same time is just odd. Unless some are using pseudonyms, it also appears that many different journalists were involved – poor coordination, perhaps?
At any rate, it’s still much better than all the celebrity-worship the British monarchy receives.
They’re all at the same time because he died. Eight admiring stories about one drag queen who died is more than just odd.
Imagine eight admiring BBC stories about one blackface performer who dies.
Or even any actual performer, or other famous person. I haven’t paid that close attention (and don’t regularly read the BBC website), but I think eight different stories about one guy within this short a time of his death would be unusual even for a more well-known and well-liked celebrity.
I think they would do some backgrounders on someone very significant…but as you say, probably not eight of them. It would look as if they kept forgetting an important detail, which would make them look stupid and incompetent. This torrent of puff pieces makes them look all that and ludicrous too.
It’s so bizarre – I mean, I guess the Ru Paul thing was the catalyst, but I just cannot fathom why ‘drag’ is such a thing, and why it’s being pushed on us so very very strongly. Some of my social circle are planning to go to ‘drag bingo’. I have zero idea why anyone should find this at all interesting or entertaining or even fresh or novel at this point. I try to be sympathetic by saying something like ‘back in the day drag performers impersonating, say, Cher or Barbra Streisand had genuine talent and actually put on performances’, unlike the ludicrous crap ‘drag’ seems to mean now – but even that was a pretty niche sort of entertainment.
