I think I’ve said it before but Cleese had every reason to believe he’d created the ultimate portrait of an egotistical, petty, conniving, ridiculous shell of a man and then Trump comes along and makes it all irrelevant.
Hahahaha but I cannot entirely agree – Basil is a different flavor of egotistical, petty, conniving, ridiculous shell of a man. He remains entirely relevant.
There’s a clip of Cleese telling the origin story of Basil, which was a hotelier the Pythons once had to deal with; it had the host of the chat show doubling up with laughter. I think I’ve shared it here.
Well, I don’t entirely agree, either. Basil is, of course, still relevant and funny but in the way Shakespeare or maybe even Aristophanes can be funny. But it seems like a message from a lost world.
