Not a hoax.
President Joe Biden announced he will not seek reelection amid continued pressure following a disastrous debate performance last month that left many in his party questioning whether he should continue to seek reelection. He will serve out the remainder of his term.
So we’ve got about 15 minutes to campaign for Kamala Harris.
Harris may be a smidge less unpopular than Biden, but as far as I see it she represents a doubling down on many of the policies that have alienated so many moderate/swing voters. If Harris ends up the new Democratic candidate, my feelings about this election will have barely changed.
Well put. It’s taken a lot of gumption to do this, and serious concern. Trump is a pissant compared to this man.
It’s now the backstabber party.
Though Harris may not be any improvement for moderate swing voters who didn’t like Biden’s progressive political stances, she is an improvement for swing voters who didn’t like Biden’s age and infirmity. I’d vote for a hat rack before I’d vote for Trump, but I would prefer a hat rack that won’t keep tippling over.
Whoever she picks for her running mate may make a difference for her electability. I’m not sure which of the potential VPs I prefer (Whitmer, Buttigieg, Newsom, Slocum, Kelly, Shapiro), though a quick search showed that every single one of them is endorsed by the trans activist Human Rights Campaign for going out of their way to protect LGBTQ++ folx — so that’s a wash. It’s not the only issue for me, fortunately, since Hat Rack won’t be on the ticket.
Yeah, a 60% tax on consumer goods and the army running roughshod through our cities to round up illegals is sufficient reason to vote for a trans hat rack over the alternative (and presumably Harris or whoever can actually articulate how disastrous the RNC’s manifesto would be).
As I see it as an outsider, whoever gets the nomination must realise the fight isn’t against Trump, it is now against the younger, smarter, more appealing, and disgusting human being known as J D Vance.
Mark my words, should Trump win, Vance will be POTUS within the first two years thus setting him up for a 10-year run to create a theocracy Iran’s Mullah’s never dreamed was possible.
I don’t know who the Dems should nominate, but I do know that they must get off their arses and raise to prominence a new generation of leaders. Without root and branch reform they, and the USA, are doomed.
The fight isn’t against Trump, or Vance. It’s against the Republican Party. If Trump and Vance died tomorrow, the Republican Party would be pretty much as bad afterward as they are now. They have a ready supply of younger, smarter, more appealing, more disgusting human beings.
Well yes, that’s why I think the project of persuading the Republicans not to be monsters is the most important short term objective. They’re going to win elections; it needs to not be a catastrophe when they do.
Great idea; how do we do it?
My inner conspiracy theorist is telling me that this was planned all along, down to the horrible debate performance. After all, Biden said back in 2020 that he wasn’t planning to serve more than one term, so setting things up for Harris would make sense. This way they avoid a messy primary season, give Harris a leg up in funding, have a chance to jiu-jitsu the age/dementia issue, force Trump’s team to change tactics relatively late in the campaign, and get a lot of free, mostly positive media coverage. And as an added bonus, all the Indian Americans who were excited about Vance’s wife will now have a chance to vote for an Indian-American for President.
My rational side says that’s all bullshit, but it does seem to work out well for now.
Mmmmmmmmno. Occam’s razor. Also would Biden willingly humiliate himself that way? He’s not a vanity-free guy, to say the least.
Yeah, I know. I spend too much time reading comment sections in social media.
@10: “After all, Biden said back in 2020 that he wasn’t planning to serve more than one term,”
Source please.
People have been saying that casually over the last six months like it’s just an accepted fact, but whenever they’re challenged on it, the best they can muster is some article from Politico or somewhere that refers to some anonymous campaign staffer suggesting it.
Show me an actual on the record statement from Joe Biden saying he wouldn’t run for a second term.
… from before this week, obviously!
He didn’t make a definitive statement publicly, but his advisors in 2019 said he wouldn’t run for a second term.

Right. Anonymous advisers. Like I said.
@OB #11:
I don’t know; just seems like it’s been neglected in the same vain as “Biden probably shouldn’t be the candidate in 2024”. Maybe stop with some of the cynical ploys like boosting nutters in the Republican primaries because you think they’re easier to beat… Recognize that when they tell you that Flight 93 election shit they mean it and operate with that on your mind. They think they’re getting their self-defense in first.
No magic spell on offer here just think “they’re demons that want to kill or enslave us” (note: I think this is actually a fairly true statement) doesn’t serve the Republic’s interest.
