Trump’s people seem to be confusing him with someone else.
Allies of Trump see his conspiratorial messages and insults based on race as anything but productive. They want him to focus his attacks on policy issues, such as immigration and the economy, rather than personal attacks against Harris.
But personal attacks are the fun part for him. Talking about policy issues is work, and talking smack about people is sheer play. He’s not a spinach before dessert kind of guy.
It’s the same strategy he used against Hillary; they seemed to be okay with it then.
He’s not capable of talking about policy issues, we’ve seen that. He has his “people” to figure that out for him. His role is to insult and denigrate anyone who opposes him. He is exclusively negative. The positive messages for Trump are “MAGA” or “drill baby drill” or “build a wall” type incendiary garbage. I don’t watch him speak anymore, but even during the debate with Biden, did he say anything substantive? Will he, assuming a Harris debate will happen, say anything substantive? It’s not who he is. False claims, insults, talking to people like we’re all sports fans, his overt contempt — this is who he is. He’s just too fkn stupid to be otherwise. If he does debate Harris, his only hope is to turn it into an inane, incoherent shouting match. I hope she doesn’t fall for it.
Michelle Obama said “When they go low, we go high”, and Hilary Clinton took that as her guiding light against Trump. Both were wrong.
When faced with a bully, sometimes you need to get down to the bully’s level and fight.
I live in hope that Harris’ courtroom experience with America’s deplorables informs her dealings with Trump. She doesn’t need to stoop to his level of insult, but she must draw him out, make his brain freeze by demanding further elucidation of his insults. Demand justification.
Then, and only then, does she hit him with the policy questions he cannot answer.
But what policies do Trump & his pals actually have? A few loud, vague and never-to-be put into force velleities to please the hoi-polloi, and then the detailed proposals of Project2025 that for obvious reasons they don’t want to talk about.
I was just thinking that yesterday. “This is how he operates, and people crumble. He goes for the jugular and they respond like sane adults. Oh but hang on, Harris is a former prosecutor. She won’t be easy pickings for him.” Rough transcript of what went on in my head. I think the only better option would be a former Mafia enforcer, but that has its own drawbacks.
