Because he believes that only he can save it. Certainly the degree to which Trump has succeeded (he was PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES FFS!) is a symptom of decline and failure. But for Trump, this is an opportunity to MAGA. The lowbrow “greatness” he’s selling to his followers is a fantasy/nightmare that never really existed in the first place. For him it’s an opportunity to harness and direct their hatred towards the Others he’s claiming are responsible for interrupting the fantasy, and highlighting the tawdry bigotries and prejudices from which it was spun. He rode this wave of hatred, resentment, and revenge to the White House once already. He’s hoping he can do it again.
