This is just so fucking weird. The ‘reasoning’ behind banning women from speaking within earshot of men was something about the female voice being a powerful instrument of lust which leads men to suffer paroxysms of lust, or some such bullshit. But banning women from speaking to other women? Does the Minister of Vice and Virtue fear an outbreak of industrial-strength lesbianism? Or does he recognise that he’d gone too far with his previous band and is now doing his utmost to prevent women from organising against him and the whole crazy regime? Next will probably be a ban on all communication from and between women, whether spoken, sign-language or written.
Given that women in Afghanistan may not now speak in public, presumably to anyone, since they may not speak directly to nor even be overheard by men, and may not speak to women either, to whom may she speak, and where? It’s surely a short list, since everyone you don’t know is ruled out. How on earth is she to function outside the house, if she can’t ask for a pound of oranges at the shop, or call her dog back when it’s running off, or book a doctor’s appointment for her child? I suppose that’s the point, though. Keep her at home or under supervision at all times. Dark days.

I think calling her dog back isn’t an issue, on account of Mo hated dogs.
