I’m not sure the internet is forever for much longer. Google are massively scaling back their archiving. Social media companies are starting to hide metadata they previously provided for free, or charging outrageous money for access.
Google might be scaling back, but that’s not going to wipe out files stored on millions of personal devices all over the planet. Of course, ‘forever’ is hyperbole, and in any case is contingent on our current civilisation not being wiped out in the next couple of months by a stray lump of interplanetary rock; but it’s still an effective enough statement of the current state of things that nobody should be relying on their edits passing unnoticed.
