24 little genders went into the forest
This isn’t three stoned kids in a garage, this is a government. It says so right in the lede.
The SNP government has claimed there are 24 different genders.
In official guidance, the devolved administration clarified a list of two dozen terms it said the gender identity of members of the public could be recorded [as?] by public bodies.
Just two dozen, eh? You know there will be people wanting new ones added to the list, and pitching fits if anyone tells them no.
Ok let’s have a look.
The 24 genders
Cisgender
Trans man
Trans woman
Non-Binary
Trans – not otherwise specified
Agender
Trans masculine
Trans feminine
Genderfluid
Genderqueer
Questioning
Intersex
Assigned female at birth – not specified
Assigned male at birth – not specified
Pangender
Bigender
Autigender
Androgynous
Gender non-conforming
Detransitioned
Neutral
Demigender – female
Demigender – male
Demigender – not otherwise specified
So, most of this profundity is just cheating – just different names for the same (silly and non-existent) thing. The rest of it is just making shit up. It’s all making shit up, with not a whole lot of difference among the kinds of shit.
What stumps me is why adults are humiliating themselves this way. The kids are still going to think you’re a boring old dinosaur who doesn’t know anything, so it’s really not worth making a fool of yourself trying to keep up with their religion.
“Data collection by public bodies should serve a clear function,” Dr Kath Murray, part of the MurrayBlackburnMackenzie policy analysis group, said. “It is not a validation exercise.
“It is difficult to see why any public body would spend resources classifying data on trans status into multiple subjective subcategories, many of which are circular, hard to understand, and/or contested.
“It is particularly surprising that the government guidance lists ‘intersex’ as a gender identity, and refers to ‘cisgender’ as an identity subcategory, a term that many people find offensive.”
Offensive and stupid.
When I read your post, I didn’t consider the possibility that I’d be one of the ones complaining that my gender isn’t represented on this list, but it turns out that I am!
Neither “woman” (the standard English term and my preferred label) nor “cis woman” (which is how gender identity theory would classify me) are on this list. Neither is “female” (which I don’t prefer because it’s often used in a dehumanizing context, but it is at least factual).
Good gosh, where to begin?
“Cisgender”, but not “cisgender male” or “cisgender female”?
“Gender non-conforming” is a gender? To which gender is it not conforming?
“Detransitioned” is a gender? What about male or female?
What the heck do the expect people to put down if they see themselves as plain old male or female and don’t buy this “assigned at birth” framing?
Offensive, stupid and deserving of relentless mockery.
@Sackbut
We cisgenders are just too boring to give that much thought to. Really, we’re like like that schoolroom lump of plasticine when all the exciting rainbow colours have been mashed together to form a greyish blob of no possible interest to anyone.
24 genders? Such pikers.
Why stop at 24. Surely, there are around 8 billion genders — one for each person on the planet. We are all unique.
They’re going to need a bigger form.
ALL OF THEM, GODDAMMIT!!! WE’RE ON A WHOLE OTHER PLANE THAT DOESN’T INTERSECT THIS LIST AT ALL!!!! WE’RE COMPLETELY BEYOND THIS LIST!!!!
Oh. Sorry. I thought you were talking about Non-Binary. We’re actually on the list. AND WE SHOULDN’T BE!!!!!
But we’re still valid, okay? Please?
Or, we’re too busy living lives of activity and accomplishment that are not centered upon illusory qualities that are supposed to make their possessors more interesting and important than they actually are.
I’m not.
(Sorry, couldn’t resist.)
Sackbut: Yeah, my first gut reaction was to ‘cisgender’ as a single gender, but trans gets two. Even if the rest of the list weren’t stupid as fuck (and it is), those three lines are clearly a deliberate condemnation of anyone who is ‘boring’.
Three terms that apply to me are not listed: man, male and “identified” male at birth. The SNP gets worse and worse.
They clearly need to educate themselves.

I think it all depends on what role-playing card games one played when they was at that stage. The one commonality that these “genders” have is that they don’t really describe anything helpful in understanding them. When it all comes down to it, we’re really all just “gender fluid” anyway. The everchanging gender cards just serves to prove the point that gender is a social derivation of the reality of sex.
So, what do the Scots propose? That each of these genders have their own restrooms? Do each of them get some sort of special recognition of special rights, or is it all just a sop to get the attention-deprived to feel seen and then shut up and leave the government to the real business of government?
THERE…ARE…TWO…GENDERS !!!
Oops, I mean four lights, beggin’ the Captain’s pardon.
The musicians amongst us will look through that list of 24 genders and wonder why hemidemisemigender has been left out; likewise demisemigender. And as this has been officially proclaimed by the SNP government, we can I think conclude that something is rotten in the state of Scotland; and I am sure that both Bill Shakespeare and Hamlet, Prince of Denmark would agree.
This is highly reminiscent of the delightfully withering commentary by Marek Kohn in The Race Gallery on the racial classification systems adopted for successive USA decennial censuses and further elaborated by the Federal Department of Education. At a first reading I laughed out loud at ‘East Indian’ was defined as ‘a person having origins in the original peoples of India, Ceylon or, in some cases, Pakistan’. Which cases were not specified, nor the category, or categories, a person of Pakistani origin should be assigned to in other cases. Perhaps you need the whole section to appreciate that as a punch line, but I won’t tempt copyright law by quoting more. Sadly, I could not find an online link; serendiptiously I found this link as a consolation prize!
@9 I was going to ‘lol’ at ‘victim’, but that identity is absolutely true.
