Yes but when HE says it
That’s…………..what we’re saying.
That’s the whole point. Gender-neutral awards=women being forgotten. That’s why there have to be awards specifically for women. If the Oscars didn’t have a Best Actress category women would have vastly fewer awards, because most movies have few women and those few women have few lines.
But
I do not care. If people like Emma Corrin and Sam Smith are so determined to present themselves as Special, they can do it at their own expense, not everyone else’s.
Yeah but when Owen says it, he doesn’t really want a women’s category at all.
It is actually quite funny, in that gallows humour sort of way. This was so obviously going to happen, just a bit awkward that it happened right away. One is supposed to slowly bring the frog to a boil…
Sure, sure, Ted. Reserve 50% of the spots for women and I can guarantee 100% of the winners will be men.
That’s why we have sex categories: women can be recognised for their achievements without being shoved aside by mediocre Owens.
So make a third “non-binary” category. Award twice as many men as women, but whatever, problem effectively solved.
…Not for the super-special snowflakes who think everything should revolve around them, though, so that’s no good. Nevermind.
The non-binary issue is trivial. Allow potential nominees to declare what category they’d like to be considered in for a particular role.
Many award shows already do this for the “lead actor” vs. “supporting actor” categories. With ensemble casts it’s often blurry, and my understanding is that the organizations defer to the (potential) nominees as to how they should be considered. It’s trivial enough to say that if Emma Corrin wants to be nominated for portraying, e.g. Princess Diana, she can be considered in the “actress” category, and if she ever plays a male role, she can ask to be considered as an “actor.” (Of course, that will never happen, Corrin is a pretty feminine-presenting actor and will only get major roles that show her as such.)
And in those rare circumstances when a non-binary actor plays a non-binary character, well, fucking pick one. Base it on what you/the character were “feeling” that day. Or refuse to be considered for either category because you’re too precious to be put into a box. (Again, will never happen, at least by any actor with a legit shot of winning a major award.)
But Screechy, for non-binary actors to select one requires them to acquiesce to the gender binary (which they want, because if no one else is labeled “male” or “female”, then non-binary is just human, not special). I have a simpler solution: if you say you are neither sex, you don’t fit into either category. You don’t belong in those awards, and to accept one is to give in to the binary. So…non-binary are not eligible for either categories until someone makes a non-binary category.
The problem is, the categories would balloon just like genders have. Need a transwoman category…a transman category…a category of those who are transwoman translebian transblack….and so on and so on and so on.
And meanwhile, faux progressives cheer them on. Go ahead and hate a neighbor. Go ahead and cheat a friend. But do it in the name of trans (or non-binary or gender queer, or asexual, or ad nauseum for ever…you can justify it in the end.
