I’d known of Caster Semanya already, but looking into this… holy shit, all three medallists for that event were intersexed with male-pattern testosterone. Holy shit.
A public apology is owed not only to the women who didn’t medal in that race, but also to the DDR 1976 swim team whose medals were stripped due to steroids. They had no choice, their government forced them to submit to the dosing without any disclosure, let alone informed consent. An apology should be issued to Shirley Babashoff who was told to be quiet about her suspicions of the DDR swim team.
And the media continues to misinform people by describing them as “cis women with naturally high testosterone levels.” People think they mean women with PCOS. They are outraged that women are subjected to testosterone suppression. They don’t understand that these athletes are male with functioning testes. And even when you show people the rules they don’t want to believe that no woman (XX with ovaries) is subject to these rules. When people say transwomen won’t dominate women’s sport, they need to look at the 2016 800m medal platform and see there are 3 men. The media are cowards.
