The jury pool
In a post on Truth Social on Thursday, Mr Trump said he had been summoned to appear on Tuesday afternoon at a federal court in Miami, Florida, where the charges against him will be read.
“I never thought it possible that such a thing could happen to a former president of the United States,” Mr Trump wrote.
That’s another symptom of his profound stupidity. He thought he could get away with anything because of his sacred status. Of course, he wouldn’t have said the same thing about Obama.
Prosecutors had also presented evidence in court in Washington DC, but a decision to file the indictment in southern Florida instead may offer some consolation for the Trump team.
Legal experts say the state – where the former Republican president is popular – is likely to produce a less Democratic-leaning jury pool than if the case had been prosecuted in the US capital.
And the judge will be Aileen Cannon, the hack Trump appointed who is so eager to give him every break she can.
As Tricky Dick Nixon found out the hard way, the President of the US (the POTUS) is not, and cannot be, above the law. The POTUS is likewise not in the same position re the law as a dictator who rules over some tin-pot republic like Enver Hoxha of Albania, or the Romanian despot Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife, who were executed in 1989 by firing squad before the wall of a public dunny (ie a shithouse.)
Many Americans believe in Trump with a religious fervour, come what may. They can have The Law, or they can have the conniving galah who calls himself ‘The Donald.’ But they can’t have both.
Nixon never faced any legal (as opposed to political) consequences for his actions. Perhaps if he had we’d be in less of a mess today.
Partly thanks to Gerald Ford. Bad bad bad move.
I think there’s a decent chance that Cannon will be recused from the case. I don’t know enough about the Southern District of Florida to say that there are no other … questionable … district judges to whom the case could be reassigned. But I have some measure of confidence that Cannon will not remain on the case.
The talking heads I listened to yesterday talked about her recusing herself, not being recused. Can others recuse her?
Also, boy do I hope you’re right. Apart from anything else it just LOOKS like such a brazen fix.
Ironic. If Donnie had never run for president, and won, he could have continued his life of crime, cover ups, and pay offs without anyone much noticing except the occasional official who was bribable. No one would have arrested him or indicted him or even really talked mean about him. Most of us were happily ignoring him, and would be happy to continue to ignore him.
I wish I never had to hear the name Donald Trump again.
