Something missing
The U.S. will be looking to snag their third straight World Cup title — and its fifth overall.
The U.S. women’s national team (USWNT) has held the No. 1 spot in FIFA’s rankings for years, and is the odds-on favorite to win once again. But this year’s tournament is considered fairly wide open, with several teams having a decent shot at the title.
…
This time around, the U.S. squad is, on average, less experienced at the international level than it has been at previous tournaments. Several veterans whose experience had been counted on were left off the roster due to injuries, including Becky Sauerbrunn, Mallory Swanson, Samantha Mewis and Christen Press.
The U.S. is in Group E, and will face Vietnam, the Netherlands and Portugal. The team will play the entire group stage in New Zealand.
It’s a funny thing, but there’s no mention of trans women in the whole piece. NPR is very excited about trans women, and so is Rapinoe, yet there’s not a word about an exciting new player on the team who transitioned last week. There’s not even a celebration of a trans woman on one of the other teams. Puzzling.
Are there ANY trans women in US women’s soccer though? At any level? I honestly can’t remember having heard of any.
It will be interesting to see what FIFA (probably the world’s most disgusting and corrupt sporting federation, even worse than the IOC) do though. Will they be proactive, or will they cross that bridge when they come to it?
Piglet, I suspect that FIFA and probably PGA/LIV Golf wouldn’t give rat’s arse as long as they make money. They’d only protect women if they realised they were going to loose massive amounts of money. All organisations end up being money driven to survive. the more nakedly they are aligned to profit, the sooner and harder that happens.
It’s different from the very few female athletes who support trans women in female sport. They tend to be either exceptionally good (and so not threatened), or end of career (and so not threatened), or not competitive (so not threatened). I have yet to see a real contender at the beginning of their career being cheerful about a bloke knocking them off their chosen career path.
Someone’s going to have to take the fall for this.
Not a single, not ONE, not even a fraction of a TV commentator for this event is female. Every single one is a man.
It isn’t that long ago that Australian Women’s A-League players were forced to wear hand me down uniforms from men’s teams.
Maybe that’s still a bridge too far for TIMs to cross.
