I think Jess Phillips did what she had to do, to avoid an almighty backlash. Note that Ghey wasn’t listed with the women who have been killed, but as an addendum, and calling him a ‘young woman’ was probably what she felt obliged to do, otherwise the likelihood would be that some prick – like the ‘Ginger gender finger-jabber’ – would have caused a scene, sullying the sombre atmosphere in the chamber following the list she’d read out. It’s not like there’s a long list of ‘trans’ people killed in the UK; I believe he was the first in over five years. I expect that once we’re out of this particular iteration of Satanic Panic we’ll be able to come up with a more accurate, and yet still compassionate, name for these young people who currently believe themselves to be the opposite sex, because they’ve been gaslit by adults.
Yes, there are a very large number of men and boys who claim a ‘trans’ identity for predatory purposes; my heart goes out to the young men and boys who could have grown into decent, healthy and whole, gay men – if only they hadn’t been abused by society and complicit medical and surgical teams.
Tigger, I agree. The inevitable reaction to leaving Ghey’s name out would have spoiled a dignified and moving vigil. It would be good if Ghey’s senseless murder actually led to some positive action to tackle youth knife crime in the UK, because we have far too many young men stabbing each other to death, but we all know that won’t happen, just endless demonstrative wailing over ‘transphobia’ and ‘blood on their hands’.
CB@1, thanks for those links! That was an excellent takedown of PZ’s nonsense. That being said, I continue to think that he’s just gaming his followers for the income that Pharyngula supplies, because he’s not a stupid man. He’s sort of the Tucker Carlson of transgender issues, in that respect (willing to obfuscate and spread lies in order to keep the money coming in). That’s just my opinion, of course, but I can come up with no other reason why an intelligent person would say the things that he says.
Do you really think P.Z. makes enough money off the site for that to be his motive? Maybe, but I just don’t see it.
CB@1,
I went down the rabbit hole of the comments on the third link. Someone was making the claim that the sexes are defined by their ability to produce functional gametes of one kind or another, and therefore pre-pubescent kids and post-menopausal women are sexless. He was very insistent on that point. Seems like an odd hill to die on.
I don’t know, but I cannot think of another reason. PZ is a smart man, and he honestly cannot make much income as a professor at a backwater nowhere school without even a doctorate program. A blog with thousands of paying supporters would have to pay well, though. He does well by stirring up controversy. Surely this is not unbelievable. “Enough” money? Well, it depends upon your definition of “enough”.

Your favourite biologist PZ Myers is getting a deserved bashing in the links above.
He’s not the only ‘skeptic’ who should know better. Dr Steven Novella has also spouted this nonsense that biological sex is bimodal recently.

Maybe including him will help highlight just how few trans are killed compared to women. One name? How are they the most murdered?
This is a response from Karen Ingala Smith about the reading:

Can’t add anything to that.
