Trump not invited
International guests are said to have been asked to travel on commercial flights and forbidden to use helicopters or private cars to reach the [Queen’s] funeral. They are to arrive together on a bus from a site in west London, Politico said, citing official documents.
Westminster Abbey is expected to be so full that only one representative from each country can attend, although they can be joined by their signficant other.
Questions have been asked in the US over whether the former president, Donald Trump, would be invited but British sources have scotched the idea that he could accompany the US delegation and said there would not be space for Biden’s predecessors. The former US president Dwight Eisenhower attended Churchill’s funeral, but in a private capacity.
They worked intensely together preparing for D-Day.
Bets on Trump trying to crash the funeral?
No, I think Trump is fine with how this works out.
He doesn’t want to be just a guest at a funeral. He wants to be the center of attention wherever he is, and the idea of being not even the head of the U.S. delegation (especially when that would be Biden) would drive him nuts.
Of course, he also wouldn’t want to be specifically excluded or disinvited, but the “one couple per country” rule takes care of that. So he’ll content himself with a few tweets (sorry, “Truths”) during the funeral about how much the Queen liked him, and how sleepy Joe Biden looks.
He would rather be the, um, honoree of the funeral? Well then. I think a lot of people would be pleased by such a situation. (This is not a death threat. I do not wish the death of any human being. Lock him up.)
Screechy, yes but then he would have to figure that out, and we know he’s not all that good at figuring things out.
GW, I’m reminded of the Jerry Seinfeld joke about how a survey indicated that Americans’ #1 fear was public speaking, ahead of death, which meant that the average person would rather be in the coffin at a funeral than delivering the eulogy.
But yes, Trump might accept being the “guest of honor” at a funeral, getting lots of attention, but anything less would be too damaging to his ego. If I recall correctly, didn’t he sulk a lot at George HW Bush’s funeral?
OB, when it comes to his own ego (or opportunities to get money), Trump is surprisingly savvy.
@4: I’m pretty sure he didn’t attend George H. W. Bush’s funeral. Or am I confused with John Mccain’s funeral? Trump definitely didn’t attend Mccain’s.
He attended but ran away the minute it was over.
