Time’s up
Do it now or you won’t be able to do it at all.
Mary Trump, former president Donald Trump’s niece, has warned that the clock is ticking for the Department of Justice and Attorney General Merrick Garland to decide on whether to indict her uncle now that the midterm elections are over.
…
The former president’s niece argued that the decision whether or not to indict her uncle [will] have to take into account not just the amount of evidence against him, but also the actions he might take in retaliation.
“I guess it comes down to one — I guess if they feel that they have enough evidence to indict, which it would be shocking if they didn’t. Cause I think we all know that they did like two years ago,” she said.

“And two, just the — if they understand, what Donald’s about to do in terms of playing this very cynical card of, ‘If I’m announcing then any attack on me will be a political one’. Right? Or ‘Any indictment of me will be politically-motivated’. So I think the DoJ has about a week,” she added.
Mind you, he’ll say that no matter what.
The recent election results have shown that Trump’s endorsement is no longer a blessing, but a curse. The foot dragging by those who would seek to prosecute him has been so tedious already that it probably doesn’t matter anymore, Mary’s urgency notwithstanding. Trump is becoming irrelevant. This is how he will be defeated. It’s happening already.
twiliter, I get where you are coming from and a lot of people are saying that. Mind you, they’ve been saying it for years “This time the GOP will see reason and dump him”. Thing is, that assumes that the GOP is a unified whole driven by reason. I think the answer is that those with principles (whether we like them or not), have largely left. Those without principles, but still with the ability to reason, are motivated by power and fear. They want power. they crave power. They fear that a vengeful trump will destroy their access to power win or lose. Then there are the hard core MAGAts who will be with their God Emperor all the way. There is no reason there, only emotions and not nice ones at that. What’s left are people who don’t know, don’t care, can probably take or leave Trump, but their identity is republican and they’ll never change regardless. they’re prime candidates to join the leopards eating peoples faces party.
Trump will not go down without a fight. If he can get the GOP nomination, he’ll run for President and he’ll do his vengeful best. if he can’t, he’ll rip the GOP asunder rather than go gracefully. My advice is to sell rusty knives to both sides and pray for sepsis.
Rob:
Trump is a prize control-freak. In my own firsthand experience of such Stalins-out-of-power, whatever they cannot control they will deliberately destroy.
Even if Trump himself kicks the bucket tomorrow, Trumpism will be with us for the rest of our lives (not very long admittedly..). The GOP is now the Coup d’Etat Party, and they will steal the next election if they can.
Bjarte, although you could dress it up with nicer words, but they’ve been trying to steal elections big and small for decades with blatant gerrymandering and voting restrictions, rules, and removal of polling places that target democratic voters. It’s sickening to watch and I don’t understand why voters in other countries don’t punish their conservative parties that engage in “learning” exchanges with the GOP.
And yet refusing to accept an election result is crossing a boundary. If the election were a soccer match this would be the difference between playing dirty and changing the numbers on the scoreboard.
The problem for the gop is that even if Trump is a drag in the general election, his support (or lack thereof) can still make (or break) a candidate in a lot of places. They’re stuck with him for the foreseeable future.
But I disagree with Mary Trump–the DoJ should indict him only when they’re sure they have a rock-solid case, and not worry about the politics of it.
