The perp escapes again
The two prosecutors leading the Manhattan district attorney’s investigation into former President Donald J. Trump and his business practices abruptly resigned on Wednesday amid a monthlong pause in their presentation of evidence to a grand jury, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The stunning development comes not long after the high-stakes inquiry appeared to be gaining momentum, and throws its future into serious doubt.
The prosecutors, Carey R. Dunne and Mark F. Pomerantz, submitted their resignations after the new Manhattan district attorney, Alvin Bragg, indicated to them that he had doubts about moving forward with a case against Mr. Trump, the people said.
There’s still the state case, but nuts all the same. The more cases the better.
The pause coincides with an escalation in the activity of a parallel civil inquiry by the New York state attorney general, Letitia James, whose office is examining some of the same conduct by Mr. Trump….Mr. Trump has disputed the notion that he inflated his property values or defrauded his lenders, and has accused Mr. Bragg and Ms. James, both Democrats who are Black, of being politically motivated and “racists.”
Ah yes, racism, which is when black prosecutors investigate white trumps.
I wonder if the resignations are a protest against pressure from that DA…? Explanations certainly need to be made.
Neither Donald Trump nor his children are going to spend a single day in prison for their crimes. They have bought and paid for their get-out-of-jail-free cards with their sojourn to the White House, likely just as their more traditional card of being fantastically wealthy was drying up.
It is the best of a very bad situation; in the counterfactual where federal prosecutors actually press charges, the Trump family would attempt to burn the country down, and might well inspire a contingent of millions of their cult members to stage an actual insurrection, with the Republican true believers eager to ride the tiger all the way to the end. And even if the Trump family did go quietly to jail, somehow, the Republicans would undoubtedly try and prosecute Biden or is successor, starting a tit-for-tat which would spell the doom of American democracy every bit as much as a successful Trumpian insurrection.
It shows that the crime is not in what you’ve done, but in doing too little. The rich and powerful don’t go to jail unless they screw the richer and more powerful, as Madoff did. The Trumps profited off of conflict of interest while they were in office, and the wealthy gained wealth while he was there.
