I dispute the claim in any case… Most people know more gays than they do women who’ve had an abortion I’d expect. I certainly don’t love anyone who has had an abortion. Then again I don’t love all that many women…
Approximately 25 percent of all women will have had at least one abortion by the end of their childbearing years. Most women won’t publicize their abortions. When it was a “thing” to “shout your abortion”, several of my friends and family announced that they had had an abortion sometime earlier in their lives. This was new information for me, and in some cases I was surprised, but I really shouldn’t have been. It’s not too far off to assume that one out of every four mature women you know has had an abortion, even if you know nothing about it, and even if you know nothing about circumstances in their lives that may have led up to an abortion (indeed, sometimes abortion is part of the process of keeping those circumstances secret). People don’t generally “shout their abortion”.
Roughly, less than 4 percent of men in the US “identify as” gay or bisexual. Whether one knows more gay men or more women who have had abortions depends on one’s circle of acquaintances, but just looking at the percentages, it seems one would have to know significantly more men than women for that to be likely. That’s probably a common case, though.
In any event, all of the “people” I know who have had abortions are women, whether they identify that way or not.
Why do the ACLU seem to think they’ll lose more support using the word “women” than they’ll gain by erasing it from all of their communications? I bet that in terms of actual financial support, the numbers might go in the opposite direction.
The obstinant refusal to name women is surely hurting their efforts, is it not? What are they so afraid of? What do they have to lose? Are trans identified females really that big a donating demographic that they’re scared of triggering dysphoria and losing funding by using the W word? Does Chase Strangio really wield that much power that she can destroy the credibility of the organization from within singlehandedly? And if it’s TiMs they’re trying to appease, they will never need abortions, and in that case the ACLU can fuck all the way off.
