One of the things that interests me about that poll is that around 2/3 said they hadn’t followed the issue. They are giving their opinion then based on the question asked, and are more likely to be swayed by the tone of the question. “Do you believe in trans rights?” Of course I do. “Do you believe that trans women should be allowed in women’s spaces?” Sounds reasonable; they’re women, right? And so on…
And, of course, a lot of them might be likely my husband…he struggles to remember if a transwoman was born woman and transitioned to man and vice versa. I think he’s finally getting it, but a lot of people don’t seem clear on that. It would be interesting to take a poll after giving people something to read about it – give one group trans propaganda, and another the facts, including incidences of prison rape, the stories of women getting kicked out of shelters because they didn’t want to share their space with an intact male, the truth as we know it (which isn’t very much, to be sure) of puberty blockers, the possible long term effects of trans treatment, and the number of desisters if left off the drugs. I suspect we would see one group decrease their support for a lot of these things. What would happen in the other group? Are their arguments strong enough to convince people? Not really, but emotion can convince quite a few people, so I’m imagining most of them would be more in favor.
What was/were the poll question/s?
The devil is in the details.
Poll questions are (mostly) here: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-60214574
