Learie, but it’s easier just to write mums off. After all, what are they but a bunch of ignorant breeding cows? I mean, they couldn’t possibly know more than a man with an opinion on the internet, could they?
Mothers, i.e., women who have been through every bit of the female biology necessary to give birth, don’t know anything about the female biology of giving birth. 99% don’t know. Sheesh.
I watched the video for one whole minute, and it was already clear that he was conflating sex with gender; any message he could hope to convey was muddled from the start.
I think it’s fair to say that 99% of those on Mumsnet don’t understand the biology themselves. It’s more complicated and much more interesting than simple male or female:
Now let me guess what he has in mind. There’s them what’s been born male, like, say, him. Then there’s them what’s been born female, like, say, women; and say, him in his dreams – otherwise why would he be rabbiting on about it.? Then there’s those born female who wish they had been born male, whose plight he maybe tries to get his head around when he has nothing better to do: eg household chores, putting out the garbage, etc, etc.
It gets worse. ‘Understanding the biology’ goes far deeper than XX vs XY in reproductive cytology, embryology and biochemistry, deeper than the nature of chemical bonds and the quantum mechanics therein operating; which I am sure is what this bastard is thinking of, and does not understand. And if he does, he will be the first cab off the rank and in line for a Nobel or ten.
Not even God understands it, I betcha; and he invented it by accident a long time ago and can’t remember what he did. Probably a bucket of this and a pinch of that, like an army cook.
It’s complicated. It’s a spectrum. Like homosexuality (or female sexuality) we never used to talk about it. But now, thanks to Judith Butler and other gender pioneers, we can admit the reality that there are people just everywhere walking around with a mixture of male and female primary and secondary sexual characteristics. We even see it in our pets and in the nature shows: All the animals displaying a mixture of the poles of the binary.
They used to know that in non-European cultures before imperialism. But then our B.S. imperialist science drummed that wisdom out of them.
The same science that I’m now using to babble like an idiot. Perhaps I can rescue myself by incoherently bringing up “inter-sex” people? How a tiny number of people with Differences of Sexual Development prove my point that it’s actually impossible to tell whether anyone is male or female?
I think this: “not understanding the biologie” is a compleet red herring.
I guess the biologie of a developing foetus is all very complicated and my understanding will only scratch the surface. But such understanding is not needed in order to distinguish a bonono or chimpansee from a human or a donkey from a horse.
That the process for producing something is complicated, doesn’t mean that recognizing the finished product is complicated.
I think it’s fair to say that 99% of people who follow Gavin Crook have no idea how feces are formed, and why. Therefore, they are no longer allowed to poop.
Very few people have much understanding of the human body. That doesn’t stop us from using it and understanding what we can see…like sex.
I had to come back and add that all the sciency science about biology and sex is not only complicated but irrelevant. Because sex isn’t anything but a social construct. Gender is what is real. That feeling in your head that tells you to change your non-existent sex.
Says the man who obviously has never visited Mumsnet. Place is chock full of biologists.

He’s ever so dismissive of women, isn’t he? I was really annoyed but then Suzanne Moore showed up and he is much, much smaller now.
I love that the men like the dickhead above don’t understand the power of women talking to each other.
You’ve got to be kidding.

@Omar “a bucket of this and a pinch of that” – is this a well-known saying? – What a good piece of pentameter.
KBP @ 8: Many moons ago I was a private soldier in the Australian Army. I may have picked that up from one of the sergeant cooks while on mess duty.
@ Omar – it’s a good saying. I will use it, with a Strine accent.
