In a megadrought
Recent climate twists have helped propel California into a third straight year of drought. Seven of the past 10 years have been dry. Some scientists say the state is in a megadrought not seen in 1,200 years.
People are starting to move away from California.
The 2020 and 2021 fire seasons were the biggest in modern California history. Last year, more than 2.5 million acres burned, an extraordinary run of flames that included destruction of the Gold Rush-era town of Greenville in the northern Sierra and the gutting of the community of Grizzly Flats west of Lake Tahoe.
And it’s not going to get better this year.
And meanwhile, over here in SE Australia, we have had one of the wettest years on record. But what goes around comes around. It is sure to turn dry in years to come, as the predictions of the climatologists for increasing extremes of weather events turn out to be true, and contrary to the self-serving bullshit peddled by the current coal-owning interests.
Which is why I am a resource-socialist.
Indeed… while it may be nice and cool most of this summer in Oregon (and wet, Jesus, never gonna be able to spray anything) we had at least one 108 degree day locally last year. Predicable yearly climate is a luxury at this point.
