How small?
Interesting ranking system the Guardian has.
Depp was asked to leave because of plausible claims of violence against his former wife, and Ezra Miller was videoed grabbing a woman by the throat, but that’s “small beer” compared to JKR having unapproved opinions.
It’s classic. We’re accused of “inciting violence” against “the trans community” by saying things, and men who perpetrate actual physical violence on women are too trivial to discuss compared to JKR saying things.
“Taking ownership” ffs. Jumped up little mimes.
The Guardian edited out “small beer” later.
I read that Russ book; one of my classmates in my writing program was assigned it, and I looked it up.
I’ve been reading a lot lately about the suffrage movement (the 100th anniversary and all that, lots of books out, but very little hype over all). Women were believed to be doing violence just by asking for the right to vote, and holding signs in front of the White House was considered extreme behavior. Now, I will admit, burning President Wilson in effigy…yeah, extreme. But holding signs? That didn’t call for anyone to die in a grease fire? That just said, How Long Must We Wait, Mr. Wilson?
When women act on their own behalf, it is seen as extreme behavior. Screechy, shouty, shrill, bitchy, shrewish, and now, violent.
Russ’s book is a classic.
