He can spell “haphazardly”?
Why does Trump think it helps him to claim that he “declassified” all the documents? That would make it worse, not better. The issue isn’t one of nomenclature, or cataloging.
Donald Trump is repeating his assertion, debunked in the justice department’s legal filing, that he “declassified” the top secret documents seized by the FBI in their raid on his Florida home.
He “declassified” them so that he could do whatever he wanted with them. Yeah that’s not exculpatory. This isn’t some empty ritual; the point is that the documents are secret and meant to remain secret.
Among a series of posts by the former president on his favored Truth Social platform on Wednesday, he also accused federal agents of “haphazardly” scattering the documents on the floor to photograph them:
Terrible the way the FBI, during the Raid of Mar-a-Lago, threw documents haphazardly all over the floor (perhaps pretending it was me that did it!), and then started taking pictures of them for the public to see.
Thought they wanted them kept Secret? Lucky I Declassified!
Why would that be lucky??? The goal is to keep them secret!
But that goal is trumped (pardon pun) by the Keep Trump Out of Jail campaign, which has to have higher priority; MAGA priority even.
Right, this is another example of what we were discussing in the other thread. Today’s priority is Why Trump Hasn’t Broken The Law. The political problem of Should Trump Be Given the Power to Declassify Documents Again is, like, next week’s problem, so who cares?
Trump will keep repeating his talking points in order to make the lies the narrative. That’s S.O.P. for him and it has been for years.
They can’t even keep their talking points straight. Trump has for now settled on ‘they’re my documents and I declassified them.’ But at the same time magat lackeys, including a Governor, are saying ‘the FBI planted the documents.’ If it weren’t so serious would be hard to take them seriously.
Rob,
I vaguely recall reading that sometimes cults will deliberately include a bizarre piece of dogma in their doctrines as a sort of test of their members’ commitment: if you’re willing to repeat this bit of obvious nonsense, then you must be a true believer. Also, having committed yourself to said nonsense, it’s harder to back out and admit you ever fell for it.
That’s sometimes what Trumpworld’s pronouncements seem like to me: it’s not about actually convincing anyone, or even providing their devotees with usable talking points, it’s about making GOP officials and conservative talking heads debase themselves by pretending to believe them.
Agreed Screechy.
I just spent a few minutes perusing law twitter. Given the way Trump and his lackeys are falling over themselves to publicly admit key elements of priming, this must represent a target rich environment for the DOJ. I wonder if Garland has cancelled leave for investigators and prosecutors yet? He’s gonna need resources if he wants to get them all. Question is, does he have the will to get any of them at all, or is he going to settle for having got the documents back?
Too good to pass up…
I’ve been pessimistic about Garland’s willingness to indict Trump, but at least on the confidential materials charges, I’m coming around. It helps that Trump is (1) practically confessing elements of the crimes every time he “Truths,” and (2) practically daring the DOJ to charge him with his accusations of witch hunts, etc.
If Trump isn’t charged, you just know he’ll crow about how this proves that he was innocent all along, the FBI was out to get him, there needs to be an investigation of the investigation, heads will roll once he’s in charge again, etc. etc. The DOJ is already neck-deep in politics, there’s no way to avoid it. Might as well do the right thing!
