Of course a few Republican senators couldn’t resist getting in a final insult:
The vote initially proceeded quickly as a result, but was later held open for some time when it became clear that GOP Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky was the only senator who had not voted. The chamber waited for him to arrive and vote before it was gaveled closed.
While the chamber waited for Paul, lawmakers and people in the gallery grew restless. Several Democratic senators began chatting with a group of Congressional Black Caucus members who had come over from the House to watch the vote.
GOP Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma voted from the GOP cloakroom because they weren’t wearing ties as is required by Senate rules on the floor. Graham was in a quarter zip and a blazer. He stuck his thumb down and receded into the cloakroom to cast a no vote.
Not to mention that awful Taylor-Green; I saw a side by side comparison of several chief justices listing their pre-appointment experience, and hers is barren by comparison to the others.
I think Holms was referring to Barrett, who was remarkably lacking any relevant experience. Brown-jackson on the other hand has probably one of the most solid cv’s in quite some time, and while some in the GOP tried to focus on the two (2!!) cases she had reversed on appeal, every US lawyer I saw comment said her record of decisions upheld as a trial judge was remarkable. I’m pleased she made it onto the court.
The sheer rudeness of the snub from the likes of graham is breathtaking. By dressing casual he was sending the signal that she wasn’t worthy of attention or respect. In essence that she was beneath his notice. Perhaps no more important than a black maid. Actions such as his are not an accident, an oversight, an ‘oops I forgot we had a vote today’. That’s a calculated insult and a signal to the base.
I dunno, was it a different black nominee he was singing the praises of recently? I seem to recall a clip Mike Pesca was playing but maybe it was someone other than Ketanji-Jackson.
Graham voted to confirm Jackson’s nomination to the Court of Appeal a year or so ago, so it’s possible there’s a clip from them of him praising her. But you may be referring to J. Michelle Childs, a Black federal judge from South Carolina who Graham was pushing Biden to nominate.
It’s not really clear to me why Graham was so big on her, as she’s generally seen as a liberal. Possibly it’s the South Carolina thing, the fact that she’s not a Harvard/Yale grad, or maybe he just knew she wasn’t getting the nomination and so it was a perfect chance for a “I’d vote for a Black female Democrat, just not THAT one” move.
Good news for a change. From what I’ve seen, she’s highly qualified and should be a good addition.
Now if they can just get Thomas and Alito to leave….

Wow… that’s the kind of behaviour you’d expect from the MTGs or The Squad, not senior statesmen. Just wow…

@Holms,
You mean Barrett, right? (Taylor-Green is one of the loony congresspeople.)
Holms #5: Yeah, but Ms. Taylor Green was a CrossFit instructor! I’d like to see Ketanji Brown Jackson do ten Burpees. So there.

Wow. That does indeed reek of a specifically calculatedly racist insult.
Bat signal goes out to Coel to swing by to explain why it’s no such thing.

Oops, yes, Amy Coney Barrett. Also, by “chief justices” I meant “Supreme court justices”. Hasty.
@Screechy Monkey:
Aye, that’s the bunny.
